  1. Mohsan Alvi - Electrical Group Ultracapacitors Power management Wiring

  2. Contents • EDLCs (Electric Double-Layer Capacitors) • Comparisons • Current applications in transport • Power management • Future considerations

  3. Contents • EDLCs • Power management • Milestones

  4. EDLCs 1/3 • Electric double-layer capacitors are called Ultracapacitors/EDLC • Main differences to conventional capacitor • Don't use traditional bulky dielectric • Two layers seperated by intervening substance • Can be stacked more closely, resulting in greater surface area per unit volume Electrostatic

  5. EDLCs 2/3 (Ragone Plot)

  6. EDLCs - Comparison

  7. EDLCs – Current Applications in Transport • Short distance transport • Buses • Lawnmowers/Tractors

  8. Power Management 1/2 • Using batteries and EDLCs to achieve performance and efficiency • Due to fast charge rates, EDLCs are ideal for capturing energy from regenerative breaking • Due to fast discharge rates, EDLCs are ideal for acceleration of vehicle • Due to high energy density, batteries are ideal for cruising

  9. Power Management 2/2 Acceleration: Speed increases (left), EDLCs are discharged (middle), Batteries are not engaged (right) Cruising: Speed constant (left), EDLCs recharge (middle), Batteries charge EDLCs Breaking: Speed decreases, EDLCs charge, Batteries not engaged

  10. Future Considerations • Find suitable EDLCs • Decide on quantity of “power units” • Think of how batteries and EDLCs will interact (sport mode vs cruise mode) • What sort of wiring will be required? (EDLC arrangement, etc)
