What is the Ottawa Charter? • On November 21st 1986, member countries of the World Health Organisation signed an international agreement at the First International Conference on Health Promotion, aiming to promote health among the global citizens. This agreement was signed in Ottawa, Canada and was called the Ottawa Charter. • The charter called for actions by the international and local bodies alike to come together and achieve the goal of ‘Health for All’ through better health promotions by the year 2000 and further.

What is Heath? • As per the Ottawa Charter definitions, health is seen as a resource we use to live our everyday life and not the sole objective of living. • An individual or a group has to identify and realize their aspirations, change and adapt to their environment and learn to satisfy their needs to reach a state of total mental, physical and social well-being. That is health, according to the Ottawa charter.

  4. Action areas for health promotions The Ottawa Charter for health promotions had 5 areas of action for the promotion of better health care. Those were – • Building a healthy public policy for everyone • Creating supporting environments around the world • Strengthening the community as much as possible • Developing personal skills bot further betterment • Re-imagining services of health care towards the illness and promotion of individual and community help

Basic Strategies for Health Promotion • Advocate – Changing dimensions that affect the social and developmental means can focus on advocating health issues. • Enable – The Ottawa Charter talks about health equity where individuals are encouraged to step up and push for better standards of life so that they get the highest quality of life. • Mediation – There is no single player when it comes to health promotion. It has to be made successful by including all sectors of the social and economic sectors of the government as well as independent organisations like the media or industry.
