Objectives for CERA Update • Introduce CERA for new ADFM participants • Report on progress of CERA • Urge all chairs, vice chairs, associate chairs, senior leaders, administrators to: • support CERA research, especially in achieving our goal of 70% response rates • encourage faculty to consider submitting educational research proposals to CERA

  3. What is CERA? Launched in 2011 to: • Increase published educational research and scholarly activity among CAFM members • Provide infrastructure and consultation • Improve surveys, better questions, fewer surveys in family medicine • Provide a clearinghouse of data • Provide mentoring and education to junior researchers http://www.stfm.org/cera/

Who Are CAFM Members?CAFM is Us CAFM = Council on Academic Family Medicine • Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM) • Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD) • North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) • Society of Teachers of Family Medicine*(STFM) *STFM is the lead organization **The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) also supports CERA financially along with CAFM members.

  6. CERA’s Start Up Goals in 2011 Within 3 years: • CAFM members will submit 10 proposals for educational studies • CAFM members will present or publish 5 educational research studies • CERA will achieve survey response rates of 70% or http://www.stfm.org/cera/

CERA Results as of November 2013 ~2 years • 110 submissions/proposals have been received (goal of 10) • 16 papers accepted for publication • 20 presentations given at STFM, NAPCRG, and AAFP conferences • Total of 36 presentations/publications (goal of 5) *report to CAFM by Mary Theobold, CERA Project Manager Vice President for Communications & Programs, STFM

  8. Program Directors: 2011 = 38% 2011/12 = 50% 2013 = 51% MD/DO CAFM Members: 2011 = 48% 2012 = 53% Clerkship Directors 2012 = 65% 2013 = 71% Department Chairs: 2013 = 60% Goal = 70% response rates CERA Survey Response Rates

  10. Summary • CERA launched in 2011 • Has exceeded goals for research proposals, presentations and publications • Is making excellent progress toward goal of 70% survey response rates • Strong support from academic family medicine organizations and ABFM

Why? • ADFM urges all chairs to support CERA research, especially in achieving 70% response rates surveys • More valid results • Using far fewer surveys, better questions • CERA saves time; produces more scholarship • CERA coordinates timing of surveys with annual membership surveys by ADFM • CERA helps avoid duplicate surveys, duplicate questions

ADFM urges all chairs to encourage faculty to consider submitting educational research proposals to CERA • Propose a few questions added to annual survey • Engage with educational research experts • Gain consultation, review and collaboration • Produce peer reviewed scholarship that is relevant and useful for all aspects of academic family medicine
