The Explore Option in the Global Health Pathway • For UCSF medical students without an official GH Pathway commitment • Supports students investigating GH through short-term clinical or research experiences (1 to 3 months) • Additional opportunities during the elective periods of years 3 & 4 • Helps connect students with placements • Provides counseling on health, safety, & funding All such students who seek funding, credit, or plan research should see a GH advisor

Going Abroad • Start early • Funding deadline April 15 for summer (RAPtr) • No need for credit in summer after year 1 • Research projects may require extra prep time (IRB) • Lots of information is available online (Office of International Programs, GH Pathway, Student Travel Health & Safety Guide) • UCSF prioritizes sustainable programs, longer commitments, and scholarly experiences • Email me for a meeting: mylo.schaaf@ucsf.edu

Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) • Mentored research with leading investigators • Focus on aging and the care of older adults • Can include basic, clinical, or health services research • Clinical and didactic experiences • Students present at professional meetings • At a regional meeting and the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting (all expenses paid) • Excellent ratings and track record • Multiple papers with MSTAR students as first authors • Several Dean’s Prize finalists for best student research
