  1. Cults & Religions

  2. Catholicism • The Pope And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:18,19

  3. When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked His disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.  Matthew 16:13-19

  4. Peter’s claims • 1 Peter 1:1 “Peter, an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ…” • 1 Peter 5:1-4 “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

  5. Against the priesthood • 1 Peter 2:1-5,9 “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ…but you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”

  6. Peter had a wife • 1 Corinthians 9:5 “Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?”

  7. About Salvation: • "No one can merit the initial grace which is at the origin of conversion. Moved by the Holy Spirit, we can merit for ourselves and for others all the graces needed to attain eternal life, as well as necessary temporal goods," (CCC 2027).

  8. "...Moved by the Holy Spirit and by charity, we can then merit for ourselves and for others the graces needed for our sanctification, for the increase of grace and charity, and for the attainment of eternal life.“ (CCC 2010)

  9. "The Council of Trent teaches that the Ten Commandments are obligatory for Christians and that the justified man is still bound to keep them; the Second Vatican Council confirms: "The bishops, successors of the apostles, receive from the Lord . . . the mission of teaching all peoples, and of preaching the Gospel to every creature, so that all men may attain salvation through faith, baptism and the observance of the Commandments.” (CCC 2068)

  10. “Salvation in Roman Catholicism is a process.  To begin this process, God grants actual grace to a person which enables him to believe in Christ.” (CCC 2000) • “After belief, the person must be baptized, which is necessary for salvation.” (CCC 1257).

  11. This baptism erases original sin. (CCC 405) • “Baptism infuses grace into the person.” (CCC 1999) • “Baptism grants justification. (CCC 1992, 2020)

  12. After baptism, he is then saved.  But, to maintain his salvation it is necessary for him to perform good works (CCC 2010, 2068, 2080) and participate in the sacraments (CCC 1129) which provide grace that is "proper to each sacrament" (CCC 1129, 2003).

  13. Grace can be lessened by venial sins or completely lost by mortal sins.  Venial sins (CCC 1862) remove part of the infused grace, but not the saving grace known as sanctifying grace (CCC 1863).

  14. To remedy the problem of venial sins, the Catholic is to take the Eucharist and also perform penance.  The Catholic Church teaches that both forgive venial sins (CCC 1416, 986).  However, penance must be done with perfect contrition. (CCC 1452)

  15. Even though sins are absolved by a priest (CCC 1463, 1495) in confession (CCC 1456, 1493), the punishment due to a person because of his sin remains.  To deal with that remaining punishment, indulgences are administered to deal with the punishment due to the guilt of the sins already forgiven. (CCC 1471, 1498)

  16. These indulgences draw upon the "good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary" (CCC 1477) and "of Christ and the saints," so as to obtain "the remission of the temporal punishment due for their sins" (CCC 1478).

  17. Now, if the Catholic has committed a mortal sin, then all his infused grace is lost.  To regain this grace, he must partake of penance (CCC 980, 1496) since it helps restore grace that was lost (CCC 1468, 1496).

  18. By Christ's will, the Church possesses the power to forgive the sins of the baptized and exercises it through bishops and priests normally in the sacrament of Penance. (CCC 986)

  19. "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin,” Romans 3:20 • "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,“ Romans 3:24

  20. "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law,“ Romans 3:28 • "For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness,” Romans 4:3

  21. "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,“ Romans 5:1 • "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8,9

  22. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost,“ Titus 3:5

  23. "For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day,” 2 Timothy 1:5

  24. "O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?"  Galatians 3:1-3

  25. "And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.” Colossians 2:13,14

  26. "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life...” 1 John 5:13

  27. Canon 30:  "If any one saith, that, after the grace of Justification has been received, to every penitent sinner the guilt is remitted, and the debt of eternal punishment is blotted out in such wise, that there remains not any debt of temporal punishment to be discharged either in this world, or in the next in Purgatory, before the entrance to the kingdom of heaven can be opened (to him); let him be anathema."

  28. Key Terminology • Absolution - the act of releasing someone from their sin by God, through the means of a priest. • Bishop - the head of a diocese, successor of the apostles. • Diocese- an area of many parishes presided over by a bishop.

  29. Confirmation- a ceremony performed by a bishop that is supposed to strengthen a person and enable him to resist sin. It is usually done at the age of 12. The Bishop dips his right thumb in holy oil and anoints the person on the forehead by making the sign of the cross and says, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit."

  30. Eucharist - The elements of the communion supper where the bread and wine are the body and blood of Christ. • Transubstantiation - The teaching that the bread and wine in the communion supper become the body and blood of the Lord Jesus at the Consecration during the Mass.

  31. Sacrament- an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. • Baptism • Confirmation • Eucharist • Penance • Indulgences • Last Rights or Extreme Unction (Anointing of the sick) • Holy Orders • Marriage

  32. Blessed Sacrament- the elements of the communion supper, bread and wine, which become the body and blood of Christ. It is offered at the altar in the church. • Holy Orders- one of the seven sacraments by which men, bishop, deacons, and priests, are given the power and authority by a bishop to offer sacrifice and forgive sins.

  33. Extreme Unction- A sacrament given to a person who is ill or in danger of dying. It is intended to strengthen the person's soul and help his love be pure so they may enter into heaven. It is done through prayer and the anointing of oil.

  34. Immaculate Conception - The teaching that Mary was conceived without original sin. • Penance- a means by which all sins committed after baptism are removed. The means are assigned by a priest and usually consist of special prayers or deeds performed by the sinner.

  35. Indulgence - An indulgence is a means by which the Catholic church takes away some or all of the punishment due the Christian in this life and/or purgatory because of his sin even though that sin has been forgiven.  This punishment is most often in purgatory but can also be suffered in this life.  Therefore, indulgences remove time needed to be spent in purgatory.

  36. Purgatory - a place of temporary punishment where the Christian is cleansed from sin before he can enter into heaven. • Rosary - A string of beads containing five sets with ten small beads. Each set of ten is separated by another bead. It also contains a crucifix. It is used in saying special prayers, usually to Mary where the rosary is used to count the prayers.

  37. Saint - A very holy person. Usually, it is someone who has been dead for many years and has been canonized by the Catholic Church. Saints do not have to pass through purgatory. • Tradition - handing down through the centuries from mouth to mouth of the teachings of Jesus. It began with the apostles and continues unbroken to the present bishopric of the Catholic Church.

  38. How to Witness to a Catholic • Avoid direct confrontation and blasting of the CC. • Stick to the main issues: • The authority of God’s Word • Salvation by grace

  39. Be very careful with terminology: • “born again”- at baptism • “receive Christ” - at weekly mass • “sin” – not always mortal • “repentance” – penance • “grace” – comes in stages

  40. Stick to the Gospel • “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for IT is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth…” Romans 1:16 • It is what God Himself says about salvation. • Truth – Jn 14:6; 17:17; 18:37;

  41. The Gospel • We are all sinners and cannot save ourselves. • Rm 3:10,23,24; Rm 10:1-4; Eph 2:8,9; Titus 3:5 • The punishment for sin is hell. • Rm 6:23; Rev 20:14 • Jesus died to pay the full penalty of our sins. • Rm 5:8; Col 2:14; Heb 9:12

  42. We must accept this free gift of eternal life by faith. • Rm 10: 9,10,13; Eph 2:8,9
