  2. Opinion in the paper • Opinion stories must always be labeled. • Why?

  3. 5 Types of Opinion Writing • Column • These are the opinion of someone paid on staff. • They usually have a theme – sports, entertainment, gossip, politics, gardening and so on.

  4. 5 Types of Opinion Writing • Column • Almost always run with a photo of the author; uses the “I”. • Are named columns because of the shape they take. • The paper does not claim ownership of the opinion.

  5. 5 Types of Opinion Writing • Editorial • Presents the opinion of the entire staff. • Never has a name attached. • Written with “we” pronouns.

  6. 5 Types of Opinion Writing • Editorial Cartoons • Give a visual opinion. • Usually exaggerates the subject to prove a point.

  7. Cartoon #3 • A Christmas Story is my favorite Christmas movie. This scene from the movie popped into my head when I read a story over the weekend about record gun sales since the election.

  8. 5 Types of Opinion Writing • Reviews • Presents one person’s opinion on a specific work • Can review, a movie, CD, play, concert, book, and so on.

  9. 5 Types of Opinion Writing • Letters to the Editor • Anyone can write in any opinion they have. • They usually address some issue the newspaper/magazine raised in a previous publication.
