Why Hitler wanted to expand German borders • Appeasement • Examples of appeasement • Why appeasement doesn’t work • Appeasement today • Lebensraum – living space: Hitler thought wherever German speaking people were, that should be part of Germany, also wanted natural resources (imperialism!) • Giving in to small demands to avoid conflict • 1938, invaded Austria w/o resistance • 1938, demanded Sudetenland be given to G (part of Czechoslovakia w/ G speaking pple & nat. resources) • 1938 – Munich Pact gave Hitler Sudetenland if he promised not to take more • March 1939 – took rest of Czech w/o resistance • Not until invasion of Poland on 9/1/39 did Europe stand up to him • Shows weakness, expected you’ll give in all the time • Iran and nuclear weapons
