Definitions “Creativity is any act, idea, or product that changes an existing domain, or that transforms an existing domain into a new one… What counts is whether the novelty he or she produces is accepted for inclusion in the domain.” ~MihalyCsikszentmihalyiCreativity – Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention

  6. Definitions “Creativity is the interaction among aptitude, process, and environment by which an individual or group produces a perceptible product that is both novel and useful as defined within a social context.” ~Jonathan Plucker

  7. Kaufman & Beghetto Big C – Creative Genius. Clear-cut eminent creative contributions (Pulitzer Prize winners or individuals with over 100 sentences written about them in the encyclopedia little c – Everyday creativity. Characterized by unconventionality, inquisitiveness, imagination, and freedom. People who are very creative but not at the Big-C level are considered to be at the little-c level (e.g. someone who writes music for fun) Mini c – Creativity that happens in the learning process. Novel and personally meaningful interpretations of experiences, actions, and events. Initial creative interpretations (e.g. a fourth grader’s explanation of why Pluto should or shouldn’t be considered a planet) Pro C – Expert-level creativity. Represents the development and effortful progression beyond little-c (but has not yet attained Big C status). Someone whose composed music is currently popular. The 4 C Model of Creativity

  8. Creativity: A Working Definition Creativity is typically defined as the ability to produce work that is novel (i.e., original, unexpected), is high in quality, and has value.

  9. Creativity has been described as the most important economic resource of the 21st Century.

  10. Examining Opposing Views Creativity distracts from the curriculum. Knowledge in the content areas is more important than creativity. Creativity is not necessary to be successful in the world.

JIGSAW • Break into groups of five or six. • Each participant will choose ONE of the six articles about creativity and take a few moments to read silently. • Choose a phrase or statement that stands out to you as an “A-HA" statement, a statement with which you strongly agree, or a statement that provides you with a new perspective. • Then, graffiti-write your phrase or statement on the chart paper provided

  14. AHA! Synthesis • After everyone has a chance to write his/her phrase or statement, discuss your article/excerpt with your table. Discuss why you chose your statement, and use the chart paper to free write about your individual and collective thoughts as you discuss as a group. • [If time permits – NEWS: Notice, Enjoy, Wonder, Suggest] • Based on your small group conversations, circle the 7most important words on your poster. These words may be found in either your statements or from your free writing. • Use the 7words to create a one- to two-sentence summary of your insights into the concept of creativity. • Select a representative from your group to access the Shared Google Presentation(Direct link within Wiki)and find the slide with your group number. Add your sentences to your slide. Underlinethe 7words you selected as a group.
