MEntal Representation of ODors: from physical features to perceptual processing Acronym: MEROD • ANR/DFG call Human and Social Sciences • Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) ENT Department • Thomas Hummel, Cornelia Hummel, Antje Hähner, Emilia Iannilli • University Claude Bernard of Lyon, Research Center in Neuroscienecs of Lyon • Moustafa Bensafi, Arnaud Fournel, Catherine Rouby, Camille Ferdenzi • 48 month • Budget: around 189 Keuros for each team • Date of start: Feb 1st 2016 • Date of end: Jan 31th 2020

  2. Points discussed on 16th Feb 2016 meeting • Task 2. Odorant Selection • - Possibility of having the same olfactometer in Dresden and in Lyon • yes, feasible; Lyon cannot build a new one but can make available the olfactometer to Dresden • MB proposes to bring the olfactometer in Dresden on 10-13th April • MB and Cedric Manesse (CM, PhD student) will come and teach the Dresden team to handle the olfactometer • The olfactometer is using its own software (see separate note .doc) • - Setup together the experimental protocol for the Odorant Selection Study • At least 50 odorants • At least 50 participants per Team (more is better) • Dresden team proposes to include patients • CM can come to Dresden for few month (PhD internship; see how we can found specific grants for this; possible from sept 2016) • Pilot test with the olfactometer could be run from may/july • The experiment could be run from August/Sept to December • One aim is to have the final protocol for July 2016

  3. Points discussed on 16th Feb 2016 meeting • Task 3. fMRI in Lyon (perfumers) • - Ethics • MB has already approval from ethics committee Task 4. fMRI “OB” in Dresden - fMRI OB • TH proposes to start running a new experiment on OB • Aim could be to test how Odor Quality is represented in the OB • CM could be involved and come for few month in Dresden.

  4. Points discussed on 16th Feb 2016 meeting Task 5. Dissemination - Website • Both, private and public portals • The Dresden team has already prepared a website: www.uniklinikum-dresden.de/merod - Dissemination • TH proposes to disseminate the information to parliament, Germany, France, EU • Organization of “smell days” in Dresden and Lyon
