  1. Metrics Discussion Engineering Node June 2016

  2. PDS-Wide Metrics Development • EN is responding to an overall need and request to move PDS towards more comprehensive metrics • Web Log Analysis (hits, types of users, etc) • Analysis of PDS Holdings (types of products, # of products, different classifications, sizing, etc) • There is both a short-term and long-term plan to accomplish this

  3. Web Log Analysis • This is well in hand with EN now generating the full suite of logs based on the original Management structure and providing results to PDS Management every month • Provides a normalized view across the PDS • Future enhancements will focus on refinement to answer additional questions • Number of searches • Types of products accessed • Services used, etc

  4. Analytics of PDS Holdings • The PDS4 information model now provides an excellent opportunity to classify PDS holdings. Furthermore, the movement towards data registered in online registries allows for performing various analytics on the data • Rather than static reports, what can we be able to query and learn about our holdings? • What classifications can we do (by missions, by product types, by instruments, by node, etc)?

  5. Types of Information • Monthly # visits by PDS node, PDS-wide using HQ IP addresses (this is done) • Monthly # visits by PDS node, PDS-wide to websites (this is captured in the report service) • Monthly # searches by PDS node, PDS-wide • Monthly # visits by data set/bundle by PDS node, PDS-wide • Monthly # visits at EN by resource (where are people going) • Downloads (#, size) by data set by PDS node • Total volume by node, PDS-wide, by mission, by data set • Total # of products by node, PDS-wide, by mission, by data set

  6. PDS-Wide Metrics Development Plan • FY16: Basic node level reports • Node hits; PDS-wide summaries • FY16: PDS-wide summary analytics (from Solr) • PDS3 and PDS4 catalog and context product holdings • FY17: Enhanced web log reports • PDS-wide search metrics at Nodes • Visits by resource (node, mission, collection, etc) • FY17: Mission level data analytics • Mission level catalog and context product holdings • FY17: PDS4 product level data analytics • Product level holdings at Nodes • FY18: PDS3 product level data analytics • Product level holdings at Nodes

  7. Exploring Analytic Tools and Ideas
