  1. Modalert Side Effects- Should you be worried? Modalert is a generic version of Modafinil which is a ‘smart drug’ used for reducing excessive sleepiness caused by sleep disorders and narcolepsy. This drug has become quite popular because Provigil, the non-generic form of Modafinil is very expensive. Before we get into the side effects of this drug, let us first understand what this drug is and how it works. What is Modalert? Modalert belongs to the class of compounds known as Nootropics. It is also referred to as a smart drug or a cognitive enhancer because it is effective in improving learning, memory and various other cognitive processes. Initially, Modalert 200mg was developed for increasing wakefulness, alertness and vigilance in people who suffered from shift work disorders or narcolepsy. People have also been using this drug for boosting concentration span, mental performance and attention. The FDA in America hasn’t approved this drug for treating ADHD/ADD. However, it is prescribed in case of adult ADHD but not for children. Modalert manufactured by Sun Pharma was developed in France during the later 1970s. It was a derivative of adrafinil along with various other benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds. In the year 1986 in France, this drug was first offered as a treatment for narcolepsy. Today, Modalert is a widely used drug compared to adrafinil even though both drugs have similar activities. There are various mechanisms of action of Modalert, some of which are still not understood. However, experts believe that this drug crosses over the blood-brain barrier and enters the central nervous system where it acts on the Dopamine transporter, promoting mental focus, motivation and more stamina. Benefits of Modalert This drug has various benefits as far as the treatment of shift work disorder, narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea is concerned. In the United States of America, these are the only approved treatments for this drug and pharma companies aren’t allowed to advertise any other use or benefit of this drug. However, physicians under the FDA policy are allowed to prescribe Modalert to patients even for non- approved purposes. Modalert is also used for different off-label purposes. For instance, it is used as a cognitive enhancer because it is said to be effective in improving memory. Some people take Modalert to improve their capacity of learning and to lengthen their attention spans. This drug has been found effective in boosting an individual’s ability to concentrate or focus. Reportedly, Modalert has also been found effective in treatment of addiction to cocaine and opiate. Modalert Side Effects Modalert has a small list of side effects when compared to other supplements or stimulant drugs. It is not only safe but also a well-tolerated drug. However, in some cases, one can experience side effects like nausea, nervousness, insomnia, anxiety or diarrhea. These Modalert side effects are temporary and mild.
