Geography • Italy is part of Southern Europe and has a distinctive boot shape. • It has some islands including Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica • The largest islands are Sicily and Sardinia. • Italy is mostly made out of land area with a small percentage of water area. • It borders Switzerland, France, Austria and Slovenia.

  3. Italy is a mountainous country (almost 40%) and has the highest mountain in Europe- Mont Blanc • Italy has many inactive and active volcanos, the most famous being Elna and Vesuvius which are still active

  4. Climate and Weather • With a Mediterranean climate ,Italy has a hot and dry summers, and cool and rainy winters • In summer temperatures can reach 40 degrees while in winter they can drop below 0 degrees

  5. Major Cities • Italy has more then 30 major cities such as Rome, Milan, Naples, and Florence • The biggest city is Rome with 2761477 people

  6. Flora • In Italy, there are forests of Beech, Pine, Oak, Fir, Ash, Maple, Wild Oak and other trees. • These forests are home to animals such as fox’s and mountain goats. • Olive and Fig trees also grow in this area. • Fruit and oil is sold throughout Italy.

  7. Fauna • Italy has many animal species • Italy has about 61000 recorded animals (more then a third of Europe’s animals) • Italy has 4777 endemic species • There are 102 mammal species,516 bid species and 56213 invertebrates

  8. Military • The Italian armed forces is made up of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri. • The Italian military had 293,202 personnel on active duty, of which 114,778 are Carabinieri. • As part of NATO’s Nuclear Sharing Strategy, Italy hosts 90 US Nuclear bombs.

  9. Sport • The most popular sport in Italy is Soccer • Italy's Squadra Azzurra has won four FIFA World Cups (1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006). • Other popular team sports in Italy include Volley Ball, Basketball, Rugby and Cycling. • Alpine Skiing is a very popular sport in Italy, with more than 2 million amateur skiers

  10. Food • Italy has many very famous dishes. The most famous are Pizza, Pasta, Lasagne, Tiramisu and Gelato
