  1. The Role of Remote Sensing inDisaster ManagementGeneva, 10-11 December 2007 Workshop Overview and Objectives Giovanni Rum, GEO Secretariat

  2. Table of contents • Background • Purpose of the event • Expected outcomes • Connections with the Global Forum • Revised Agenda Workshop The Role of Remote Sensing in Disaster Management Geneva, 10-11 December 2007

  3. Background • The Workshop is the first action in implementing the GEO-ITU MOU • Observations, derived information and their timely dissemination are the essential elements for Disaster Risk Reduction and they need clear allocation of spectrum to ensure quality and reliability • GEO and ITU have a common interest in the availability and affordability of information and communications technology (ICT) in particular developing Countries Workshop The Role of Remote Sensing in Disaster Management Geneva, 10-11 December 2007

  4. Purpose of the event The purpose of the event is twofold • Increase the awareness, within the Communication Community, of the benefits to the Society and to people coming from Remote Sensing, in particular for what concerns all the phases of the Disaster Risk Reduction cycle, from preparedness to early warning and response and back to preparedness through reconstruction. • Highlight the need of an effective spectrum management in order to ensure continuity of key observations Workshop The Role of Remote Sensing in Disaster Management Geneva, 10-11 December 2007

  5. Expected outcomes Based on diverse knowledge and information gathered by Participants, the event should: • increase the political visibility on GEO and ITU common matters, in particular of the need of an effective spectrum management to ensure continuity of observations; • contribute to ITU’s work in Remote Sensing, particularly, as discussed under ITU-D Study Group 2 Question 22/2 on the Utilization of ICT for disaster management, resources, and active and passive space-based sensing systems as they apply to disaster and emergency relief situation. • contribute to ongoing efforts of ITU and GEO capacity building in the areas of ICT and Remote Sensing respectively. Workshop The Role of Remote Sensing in Disaster Management Geneva, 10-11 December 2007

  6. Connections with the Global Forum • GEO Secretariat Director has given one of the speeches for the Opening Ceremony of the Global Forum • Signature of the ITU-GEO MoU for ”Cooperation in Earth Observations, Emergencies, and Other Matters of Mutual Interest in Information and Communications Technology” has just take place within the Forum Program • Feedback from Workshop on Remote Sensing will be reported to Forum Plenary on 12 Decemeber (14:00 to 14:30) to provide relevant inputs to the Final Document of the Forum.
