  5. Let’s Practice Sample School Improvement Goal • Improve reading

  6. Improve reading… To improve reading, double the number of books checked out from the school library by May, 2005.

  7. Selecting Goals • What is the greatest area of need? • Can we verify this with data?

  8. School Wide Goals • What should our school wide SMART Goals be? • School wide goals are usually 1-3 year out.

  9. School Wide Goal With in 3 years, 90% of our students will be proficient readers at their grade level.

  10. Indicator • What indicates that this is an area of weakness? • Indicators are based on current data • Consider reviewing strands or domain where student score lower • Select broad categories for improvement

  11. Example of Math Indicators • Basic math fact • Computational Skills • Application • Reasoning • Problem solving • Spatial relations • Statistics

  13. Measuring Goals How will we measure progress? • Measures: Tools used to monitor progress toward our goals. • Measures are specific to the indictors.

  14. School Goal Measures • MEAP testing • ISD-Wide Annual Assessment • Quarterly Common Assessments • Timed tests • Weekly quizzes • Unit test • Performance rubrics

  16. Targets • What should our Targets be? • Shorter term incremental steps toward the goal • Targets are set for each measure

  17. Selecting Targets • Based on the data • Based on our resources • If we have no data, what is a reasonable yet challenging level of improvement we think we have a chance of achieving? Always remember to focus on what’s attainable?

  19. From Goal to Action! • Brainstorm strategies that can help you achieve your goal • Then, evaluate: • Which are the most doable? • Which would have the biggest impact? • Which would be fun? Remember: The “best” activity or strategy means nothing if you’re not motivated to complete it.

  20. For Each Activity… Identify: • Expected Results • When Activity will be implemented • What is needed to implement it • Persons responsible • Target audience

  21. Getting Results • Review progress toward goals (at least once a month) • Communicate the status to team members (email works great) • Be Accountable for ALL your results • What’s Working • What’s Not • Revise goals, as needed
