  1. TSM for Mail Update Dave Daun IBM Advanced Technical Skills djdaun@us.ibm.com

  2. Topics • What’s new with DP for Lotus Domino • What’s new with Exchange 2010 • What’s new in DP for Exchange 6.3 and Flashcopy Manager 3.1 • Backup in replication environments • Understand Volume Shadowcopy Services (VSS) • Individual Mail Item Restore

  3. Components • TSM for Mail • Data Protection for Exchange V6.3 • Data Protection for Domino V6.3 • Flashcopy Manager V3.1 • For hardware assisted (flashcopy or snapshot) backup of Exchange and SQL-Server

  4. What’s new with DP for Lotus Domino • Enhanced Statistics • indicates whether a backup or a restore is encrypted, compressed, LAN-free, or de-duplicated. • The final statistics for backup operations provide deduplication, LAN-free, and compression information about the backup • The final statistics for restore provide LAN-free information about the restore • When viewing the backups that are available to be restored, you can see if the backup was encrypted, deduplicated, or compressed • Client Scalability • Memory management has been enhanced for in-memory lists that contain large numbers of objects • Communication Resiliency • DP for Lotus Domino has been modified to tolerate most types of connectivity failures. • Cancel Session Support • Verifies whether the session was canceled by the TSM administrator and if so, DP for Domino exits without processing any additional databases

  5. Exchange Server 2010 – What is new? Microsoft changed a few significant items with Exchange Server 2010: • Legacy-style (streaming) backups are no longer supported by Microsoft! • Exchange Storage Groups were eliminated (there are only Databases) • Recovery Database (RDB) replaces the Recovery Storage Group (RSG) • Number of databases allowed per server increases from 50 to 100 • Database Availability Groups (DAGs) replaces LCR, CCR, and SCR replication • Single Copy Cluster (SCC) is no longer supported • Some PowerShell commands have changed. Details can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124413.aspx 5

  6. Exchange Server 2010 – TSM / FCM Support • Data Protection for Exchange 6.1.2 added Exchange Server 2010 support (June 2010) • FlashCopy Manager 2.2.0 added Exchange Server 2010 support (June 2010) • Exchange Server 2010 only supports VSS-style backups and requires the TSM Windows Backup/Archive Client 6.2.1 (or later) • You do not need FlashCopy Manager (or TSM for Copy Services) to perform Exchange Server 2010 VSS backups to the TSM Server • You only need FlashCopy Manager for: • Performing and managing Exchange Server 2010 VSS LOCAL (persistent) backups • Performing “offloaded” backups to the TSM Server • Operating in an environment without a TSM Server 6

  7. Exchange Server 2010 – TSM / FCM Support • Customers who do not have FlashCopy Manager installed must manually configure for VSS operations (details are in the User's Guide) • Data Protection for Exchange 6.3 User's Guide can be found here:http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tsminfo/v6r3/index.jsp • FlashCopy Manager for Windows 3.1 User's Guide can be found here:http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tsminfo/v6r3/index.jsp 7

  8. New TSM / FCM CLI (TDPEXCC) Options • /EXCLUDENONDAGDbsExchange Server 2010 only – excludes the specified databases from backup if they are not part of a Database Availability Group (DAG). • /EXCLUDEDAGACTiveExchange Server 2010 only – exclude the specified databases from backup if they are part of a Database Availability Group (DAG) and they are an active database copy. • /EXCLUDEDAGPASsive Exchange Server 2010 only – exclude the specified databases from backup if they are part of a Database Availability Group (DAG) and they are a passive database copy. • /EXCLUDEDB=DB1,DB2,..,DBn or /EXCLUDESG=SG1,SG2,..,SGn Excludes the specified databases(Exchange 2010) or storage groups(Exchange 2003/2007) from backup • /INTODB=db-nameSimilar in function to the existing "/INTOSG=sgname" option to support Exchange 2010 databases (instead of storage groups.) to restore a database to a specified location • /ERASEexistinglogs = Yes | Noapplies to restore of full and copy VSS backups. For Exchange Server VSS CLI restores so that existing logs could be removed before a FULL + INCR.. INCR..... or FULL + DIFF is run. 8

  9. New in Data Protection for Exchange V6.3 • New MMC GUI – look and feel of Exchange Management Console • Restore VSS backups to flat files for processing outside of Exchange • Enhanced statistics to include compression, de-duplication, and LAN-free information 9

  10. Full Normally for small servers All data is backed up each time – longer backups Most efficient restores (fewer logs to restore and replay) Full + Incremental Most common for enterprise servers Only changed data is backed up with incremental More complex restores - All logs must be restored and replayed Full + Differential All changes since last full are backed up each night Easier restore scenario - All logs are stored together Backup Strategies

  11. Backup in LCR and CCR EnvironmentsExchange 2007 • LCR – Local Continuous Replication • CCR – Cluster Continuous Replication • LCR and CCR use asynchronous techniques (log shipping) to replicate an Exchange storage group

  12. Backup in LCR and CCR Environments • Backups can be done on the Active node or the Passive Node (replica) • Only VSS backups are supported on the Passive Node • Restores can only happen to the Active Node • Suspend the storage group copy before beginning the restore • Restores can be made to an alternate location • Microsoft does not support backup of a Passive Node (replica) in Standby Continuous Replica (SCR)

  13. Backup and Restore of Database Availability GroupsExchange 2010 13 Database Availability Groups (DAGs) are a replication technique similar to LCR and CCR • Backup Active or Passive database • Restore only to Active database

  14. Exchange 2010 DAG – Best Practices Backup • Perform backups from the same passive database copy • Relieves resource strain on active databases • Perform backups for a given database from the same Exchange Server • Simplifies restore procedures and scheduling • Backups performed from different DAG states or different DAG servers are managed separately • Design limitation being addressed in the next release • Use the command-line backup options /EXCLUDEDAGPASSIVE, /EXCLUDEDAGACTIVE, or /EXCLUDENONDAGDBS to help automated scripts pinpoint specific databases to back up • See TechNote: Automating Database Availability Group backups for Exchange 2010 • http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21433016 Restore • Restores can only be performed to the active copy (Microsoft requirement) • Follow the restore steps in the User’s Guide, especially for restores of DAG databases

  15. IBM Tivoli Storage Flashcopy Manager Benefits: Online, near instant snapshot backups with minimal performance impact Enable Storage Subsystems Flashcopy for Applications Instant Restore (FlashBack) No deep storage skills necessary Local Filesystem LAN/SAN Database Production Disk Flashcopy T1 Snapshots Flashcopy, Split Mirror, Shadow Copy, … Flashcopy T2 • SVC • XIV • DS8000 • Storwize V7000 • DS 3/4/5* Flashcopy T3 *VSS Integration

  16. Flashcopy Manager with TSM Auxiliary Server (Optional) Production Server TSM Server Local Filesystem Off-Load LAN/SAN Backup Path Database Production Disk Snapshot T1 Snapshot T2 Snapshot T3

  17. FCM Backup for Exchange and SQL-Server: VSS Integration Example: Flashcopy Manager Examples: DS800 SVC XIV

  18. Understanding VSS Providers • VSS Providers can be hardware or software • Hardware Providers create snapshots using the capabilities of the disk subsystem (Flashcopy, Snapshot Volume, etc.) • Hardware vendors provide a VSS “driver” that allows their hardware to function properly in a VSS environment • These drivers must be properly installed and configured • For DS8800, V7000 and SVC, source and target volumes must be configured • Microsoft provides a software provider with Windows called the “System Provider” • No configuration is necessary • The System Provider stores snapshots on the local disk. These snapshots are “write on change” type snapshots that only store the changes to the base data. • Be sure to plan for the snapshot disk requirements

  19. Exchange and SQL-Server Backup • Look and feel of Microsoft Management Console • Note quick links to major functions

  20. Exchange and SQL-Server Backup • Directory tree allows selection of domain, server, Information Store and Database • Database is lowest level of backup granularity

  21. Exchange and SQL-Server Backup • No separate GUI for backup and recovery operations

  22. Exchange and SQL-Server Restore • Local VSS backups will perform a VSS Fast Restore or a VSS Instant Restore (if available) • TSM Restore will perform a network/SAN restore

  23. Flashcopy Manager Restore Types (Exchange and SQL-Server) • VSS Fast Restore • Restore data is copied from a VSS Backup that resides on local shadowcopy volume • Restores are fast because data does not need to be transferred from the TSM server • Supports Full, Copy, Differential, and Incremental backup types for Exchange • Restores at database granularity • VSS Instant Restore • Restore data is copied from a VSS Backup that resides on a local shadowcopy volume using a hardware assisted function (e.g. Flashback) • Data must reside on DS8000, V7000, SVC or XIV storage device • Only Full and Copy (Exchange) backup types are supported • Must restore all databases on the VSS shadowcopy volume • Restores are very fast because data does not need to be transferred from the TSM server and hardware assisted copies avoid the file copy

  24. Mailbox Individual Mail Recovery (IMR) MS Exchange TSM Server Policy-based version management LAN/SAN MS Exchange Databases Mailbox RDB RSG Mail/Mailbox Restore VSS Snapshot Mailbox VSS Snapshot Mailbox Data Bases VSS Snapshot No additional licences for IMR from FlashCopies

  25. Performing Individual Mailbox Restores (IMR) • Filter by Mailbox, Sender, Subject, Dates, Body Text, Attachments, Folder, etc. • Return one or more mailboxes, one or more items • Restore to same location, alternate location or .PST file

  26. Performing Individual Mailbox Restores (IMR) • New Mailbox Browser
