MAGMA • Founded in 1980 as a social club by 3 newcomers • Evolved into a service providing agency for newcomers • Funded by C.I.C. and T.E.D. • Served approximately 200 newcomers in 2005 MAGMA's mission is to enrich and enhance the well being of our community by fostering and nurturing respect, understanding, acceptance of and assisting people from all heritages

  7. New Brunswick Immigration Facts • Growth rate has reached 0.0% • Aging population • Shrinking Workforce • Will affect services • 700-800 newcomers per year • Retention rate is less than 30% (We pay other provinces profit)

Services Providing assistance to Newcomers through the following programs: • RAP (Resettlement and Adaptation Program) • ISAP (Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Program) • Literacy, LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) • Childminding services for LINC participants • Host Program • Employment Counseling • Enhanced Language Training • Access Centre

  9. Resettlement Adaptation Program ( RAP) • 20 000 000 Refugees Worldwide • Government Assisted Refugee -32 000 in Canada 2005 (of 225 000) -180 in New Brunswick -59 in Moncton • 6 week resettlement period -Meet & Greet -Initial settlement -Orientation

  10. Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Program (ISAP) • Long term assistance -Permanent Residents -wide variety of services • Difficulties -culture shock -integration • Solutions -Government’s role -Community’s role

  11. Host Program • Helping create link to the community • Volunteer matched with Newcomer • 1 year commitment • Positive experience

  12. Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) • 4 levels of language instruction • exchange experiences • practice the language • socialize and make new friends

  13. (ELT) Enhance Language Training • Intensive English Classes • Employment Preparation • Computer Training (Access Centre) • Subsidized Job Placement (ELT in the future)

  14. Employment Counseling Clients are guided by counselors in: • Labour Market Information • Current trends in the employment sector • Certification and accreditation process • Employment preparation • Job search techniques • Employment search and application • Employment training sessions

  15. Challenges in Accessing the Workforce • Language • Accreditation/Certification • Cultural Diversity not widely embraced • Education • Lack of sensitivity training in the workplace • Need for entry level work practicum (Canadian Experience) • Transportation

Reasons to hire Immigrants • The Canadian workforce is shrinking and the demand for labour is growing • Immigrant expected to account for all net labour force growth within the next 10 years and all net population growth in the next 25 years • Skilled immigrants can help Canadian companies do business with the world • Immigrants are excellent workers • The relationship developed by hiring Newcomers in 2006 can impact on a long term access to employees in the future

What Employers can do • Plan for potential shortages • Develop a better understanding of new cultures in the work place (sensitivity training) • Invite MAGMA to meet HR staff • When posting an opening, send a copy to the MAGMA employment office • Be open to hiring immigrants for entry level jobs/work practicum • Fast track employees to higher wages enabling them to stay in the area
