  2. What is the BES? • Maryland Book Award • Winners selected by Maryland students • EMMS participates in 3 categories • 4-6 • 6-9 • 9-12 • Voting… • You must read at least 3 books to vote • We vote in April • The rating cards will make voting easier

  3. What is the BES? • A few thoughts about book selection • Don’t “pooh-pooh” the 4-6 books because they are listed for elementary and middle school students • They are all very well written • And entertaining • Not all the 9-12 books are appropriate for every middle schooler • If it not in our media center, check with a parent before getting it from the Howard County Library

  4. What is the RAD Book Club? • County-wide Book Club • Sponsored by Mrs. Adelman • Read 1 Book a Month • Can read one or all the books • Meet once during the school day • discuss the book • prepare for the county meeting • County Meetings are held at Miller Branch • Attendance is voluntary • EMMS will lead at least one of the discussions

  5. What are the RAD Books? • November • The House of the Scorpion • December • Inside Out & Back Again • January • The Running Dream • February • The Watsons Go to Birmingham • March • Dead End in Norvelt • April • Sound Bender • May • Maus

  6. What is the YAC? • State-wide writing contest • You can submit… • A short story or • A poem • It is a 3-level contest • School-wide • County-wide • State-wide

  7. What are the YAC entry guidelines? • Your cover sheet must be… • Accurate • Complete • Legible • Be sure to sign your cover sheet • Your name is to be written on the cover sheet only • Save your work • You may need to e-mail it to your teacher

  8. What should your entry look like? • It must be attached to a cover sheet • Cover sheets are located in the manila folder hanging on your English teacher’s bulletin board • Typed in Times New Roman or Comic Sans • Font size 12 • No graphics/pictures or colored ink • No more than 3 pages • Absolutely no violence

When are the contest deadlines? • December 7: Your entry must be turned in to your English teacher • December 10-18: School-wide winners will be selected and notified • Mid-January: County-wide winners will be selected and notified • Mid-February: State-wide winners will be selected and notified
