  1. Skills + Techniques Understanding when you would use a method of practice and why

  2. Homework task 3 – page 20 • Discuss why it is appropriate to use different methods of practice at two different stages of learning. Give examples from your programme of work to support your answer.

  3. Individual task • Split the benefits of practice between either: • - benefits of unopposed practice at preparation stage • - benefits of opposed, conditioned practice at practice stage

  4. Split these benefits of practice into appropriate sections 1 - benefits of unopposed practice at preparation stage 2 - benefits of opposed, conditioned practice at practice stage ·Consistency in movement can be developed building muscle memory ·Specific to skill being developed ·Consolidates and refines subroutines in more challenging context ·No pressure which limits attention demands ·Focused on weaknesses identified ·Allows learning to take place ·Repetition nature helps to over learn movements ·Develops a skilled performance ·Understanding of how to do skill developed ·Helps to build solid foundation for continuous progress ·Appropriate to progressed level of skill performance ·Decision making built into skill practice ·Begin to adapt technique to meet demands of variable practice ·Improves effectiveness of feedback process at progressive stages ·More challenging which maintains motivation and interest in skill development ·Easy to complete building confidence and kinaesthetic awareness ·Unpredictable and uncertain which is required due to skill classification ·Builds pressure into practice ·Identifies whether learned subroutines can be repeated under pressure ·Deception, timing and economy of effort all developed ·Predictable and certain which is required at stage of learning ·Progresses skill development to be more like game

  5. Class task • In 2’s • Given two stages of learning • You must choose two different methods of practice you would use • Give reasons why: • one method of practice suits one of the stages of learning • and why the other method of practice suits the other SOL • Give an example from your work to support each method • 10 minutes

  6. Carouselling • 5 minutes • Pass your sheet on (receive same methods you had) • Mark other groups sheet • Tick if you agree • Cross if you disagree • Question mark if you are unsure • Add in anything you feel has been missed

  7. Read other stages of learning • 10 minutes • You will see 2 sheets of the other stages of learning • As before – tick, cross or question mark • Add anything you think has been missed

  8. SOL you can get • Preparation + Practice SOL • Practice + Automatic SOL • Give method • Give reason/s • Give example from your work to support

  9. Preparation stage • I used solo/shadow practice to develop the drag R to L elimination technique • Benefits of this method means that I can remove any pressure and practise the technique in isolation. This allows learning to take place and more specifically it allows me to learn the subroutines/movement required. The practice is predictable which is required at this stage of learning. • An example from my programme of work was that I repeated a shadow practice ten times. I copied the movement of the drag right to left with a (hockey) stick in my hands. I did not use a ball and I pretended to go round the cone, focusing on the control and coordination of my footwork and stick work.
