Implementation of the Settlement Agreement • Collection of Information on the Status of Chair nominees – completed • All chairholders contacted -- December 2006 • Forms modified to collect data -- November 2006 • Targets for the Representation of Members of Protected Groups – ongoing • Request for proposals released – February 2007 • Currently in the evaluation phase of choosing a consultant • Expect to deliver methodology to universities by late summer • Expect universities to determine their targets by early autumn

Implementation of the Settlement Agreement • Reviewing Systemic Barriers – upcoming • Review of systemic barriers to people in four protected group to be included in next program evaluation exercise (10th year review – 2010) • Training of Canada Research Chairs staff on diversity and systemic discrimination – completed • All staff has received training, and training is planned on an ongoing basis

Implementation of the Settlement Agreement • Establish a process for providing recognition to universities with exemplary equity practices – ongoing • A committee of staff from the Canada Research Chairs Secretariat and the SSHRC Communications team are discussing possible mechanisms to recognize universities with exemplary practices in recruiting, nominating and/or appointing Chairs and meeting equity targets. • Post, on the Canada Research Chairs Web site, the name, title, postal and email addresses of a person to whom complaints about equity issues can be addressed – completed in November 2006

Eligible Grants • A Program Review Committee (composed of the VP Programs of the three federal granting agencies) and senior managers of the Secretariat will review all current agency specialized programs to ensure that their treatment is consistent, appropriate and transparent. • The Program Review Committee and senior managers of the Secretariat will meet at least annually to review all new agency programs to assess their eligibility for inclusion in the CRCP and ICP base. Will also revisit existing inclusions/exclusions based on institutional feedback.

Special Chairs 120 Set aside for smaller institutions (Authority: TB/MC) plus 10 Special program in February 2003 (from reserve) open for Universities with no allocations (Authority: Steering September 25, 2002) Eligibility for special chairs (120) The program sets aside a special allocation of 120 Chairs for universities that have received one per cent or less of the total funding paid out by the three federal granting agencies over the past three years.

Canada Research Chairs combine forces on health care and population health • Main objectives of the February 26-27, 2007 workshop • Develop a shared appreciation of the collective catalytic and transformational capacity of CRCs; • Promote “big thinking” in relation to future research initiatives; • Establish a virtual think-tank of thought leaders that influence public debate and decision-making in relation to health and the Canadian health system; • Build supportive personal and professional networks that enable successful navigation of an increasingly complex research, social and economic environment; and • Use state-of-the-art technology to enable ongoing communication.
