Metals are a group of elements that share certain properties
The general physical properties of metal are as follows • Hard and strong • Solids (only mercury is a liquid at room temperature) • Shine (when polished) • Good conductors of heat • Good conductors of electricity • Dense (have a high density) • Malleable and ductile
They conduct heat and electricity well, that is why cooking pans and electrical wires are made of metal.
They are also strong and can be shaped easily; That is why they are used to make structures such as bridges.
They are rarely used in their pure state-they are usually mixed with other metals or nonmetals to form combinations known as alloys
Most metals have similar chemical properties . The most important chemical reactions of metals are with oxygen, water and acids, which are common substances found in nature. Although the chemical properties of metals are similar, they do not all react exactly the same way. These differences in the way metals react can be used to develop a Reactivity Series of metals
