  1. Models for Adoption • Peggy Ertmer’s “…Scaffolding the Adoption and Change Process” 2001. • ISTE’s Learning and Leading with Technology four part series in 2008. Harris (2008) “One Size Doesn’t Fit All”. • Link to Learning and Leading

  2. The Field of Dreams and the Mandate to Use Computers …if they have it why don’t they use it? Looking at the implications of Ertmer's "Responsive Instructional Design: Scaffolding the Adoption and Change Process" Link to the article

  3. What are some of the barriers to increased classroom use of computers? • How may these barriers best be overcome by designers and trainers?

  4. While 99% of U.S. public school teachers have access to PCs, more than 70% did not feel well prepared to use this technology. (Ertmer 2001) • Many developers/instructors must approach teachers “who either don’t want training or are not prepared to learn from it, or both”. • Where does this leave instructors?

  5. Teacher Beliefs High level of self-efficacy? • The critical link between beliefs and teaching decisions • Ateacher’s belief regarding his or her ability to use computers may be key, given the role that the concept of self-efficacy plays upon willingness to experiment with technology Many levels of self-efficacy?

  6. Teachers with low skills and low confidence • Late adopters do not react to the same strategies as early adopters - don’t react to being told that “they need to use technology” (They are smart as there are often problems with ICT integration) • Best strategy to increase self-efficacy appears to be establishing relevancy and experiencing even small success • Learning teachers often prefer to not work with experts • Experiences with late adopters at KES • Use of email and online research of a new sound system • Booking a trip to Europe • Building a cadre of teachers with a variety of skill levels • Use Survey Monkey to provide focused training

  7. Survey Monkey The basic version is free Survey first and then send out a list of workshops for teachers to choose from and let them rank their preferences.

  8. Kesper then and now

  9. Integrating ICT into Classes • The sustainable classroom model case studies and examples which use a Smartboard, a document camera, a student response system and a computer to maximum effect. • Marzano’sWhat Works in Classroom Instruction which was used in the development of the lessons for the sustainable classroom case studies. case studies and examples

  10. Interactive Whiteboards • Many classrooms at KES now have interactive whiteboards. • Interactive whiteboards allow teachers and students to interact with computers in a different way. • They are part of the classroom equipment and another tool to be used.

  11. What Does Technology Integration Look Like? From data collection at the KES pond to lab report writing in class

  12. Blogs as Course Websites: IB History Link to Sample Homework Blog Setting up a blog Link to History Blog

  13. Blogs for a specific unit or class Link to Population Unit Blog

  14. Blog for a class Link to Room A207 Blog

  15. Two Views of Technology in Schools “The digital revolution in schools is not about teaching students to use technology but about “teaching students to do everything using technology.” – Prof. Dede, Harvard Image from Presentation Zen website

  16. The Bad or at least the Questionable • Multitasking • The dangers • Educating students • Lack of Deep Reading • Need to develop neural pathways • History and ICT • Use technology, but not in class • All articles in workshop reading material Cover of Time from “The Adventure of Strategy” Webpage http://www.robmillard.com/archives/intergenerational-issues-the-dangers-of-multitasking.html

  17. The Good • Formative Assessment • Smartboards, Student Response System • Vodcasting and screencasting • Chemistry classes • Ill-structured Problems and Real Life Situations • Movie Maker • Physics Simulators • Online field trips Link

  18. Physics Simulations

  19. Simulation Software Physics Simulation Gizmo from Explore Learning and link for Crocodile Clips Predator Prey Interactions fromArcytech

  20. Screencasting • “Sir, this website sounds like you…” • While teaching, the teacher may record everything that happens on the computer screen and everything that he says. • The teacher may replay the clip for another class or students may review the clip when they are away from class. • This recording may be done in advance.

  21. Sample Screencast for Excel

  22. Suggestions • Keep it simple. • Provide timely and understanding support for teachers. • Think carefully about how and why resources will enhance learning or help teachers. • Create a environment of prudent risk takers and innovators.

  23. Done Questions? http://movingtocacththedigitaltrain.blogspot.com/ Website for this presentation

  24. Overview • Obstacles and Opportunities • Examples of Integration • Moodle • Sustainable ICT • Blogging • Ertmer’s Research and L&L • The Debate • The Good • Vodcast, sims, moviemaker, online resources
