PROGRAM STRUCTURE • FULL-TIME PROGRAM http://bschool.nus.edu.sg/PHD.aspx • PROGRAM DURATION: 4 -5 YEARS • Preparatory Classes of 3 weeks will commence prior the start of the semester • Coursework (Year 1 & 2) • Summer Paper (End of Year 1) • Qualifying Exams (End of Year 2) All students must clear the department QE (comprising of 3-4 papers) by the end of the second year. To clear the QE, the student must obtain a pass grade on all papers tested in the QE. Students who failed may be given (at the discretion of the department) one more chance to redo the QE, taken not more than 3 months, but not less than 1 month, after the first trial • Thesis Writing, Submission and Defense (Year 3 & beyond)

  8. I. COURSE REQUIREMENTS • ALL DEPARTMENTS REQUIRE YOU TO TAKE A TOTAL OF 10 – 12 POST-GRADUATE RESEARCH COURSES. THE NUMBER OF CORE AND ELECTIVE COURSES YOU NEED VARIES BY DEPARTMENT • STUDENTS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO COMPLETE 2 GRADUATE RESEARCH SEMINAR MODULES. THESE ARE EXCLUDED FROM THE 10-12 COURSES REQUIREMENT.

  9. I. COURSE REQUIREMENTS • FIND OUT FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT • HOW MANY COURSES IN TOTAL ARE REQUIRED? • HOW MANY SHOULD BE CORE / ELECTIVE • READ THE CURRICULUM INFORMATION GIVEN TO YOU THROUGHLY • ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR GRADUATE CO-ORDINATOR/ SUPERVISOR/ MENTOR

  10. II. ELECTIVES • WHAT ARE ELECTIVES • COURSES TAKEN FROM OTHER DEPTS / FACULTIES • TO HELP YOU BUILD THE FOUNDATION SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • HAVE TO BE GRADUATE MODULES (LEVEL 5/6) • CONSULT YOUR GRAD-COORDINATOR/ SUPERVISOR ABOUT CHOICE OF ELECTIVES

  11. COURSE WORK • PLAN YOUR COURSEWORK CAREFULLY • Department may offer a seminar only once a year • Electives may not be offered by other faculties and departments in the semester you want • Timetable clashes • Need careful planning to avoid disappointment

  12. COURSE WORKONE FINAL WORD • Expectations : Min CAPS score of 4.0 each semester. • A warning letter will be issued once you fall below the min CAP of 4.0 • You may be terminated from the PhD Program should you fall below the min CAP of 4.0 for two consecutive semesters

  13. YOUR SUPERVISOR AND THESIS COMMITTEE • IDENTIFY A SUITABLE SUPERVISOR (MAY OR MAY NOT BE YOUR MENTOR) • FORM A COMMITTEE OF 3 (1 Supervisor + 2 members) BY END OF YEAR 2 • KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THEM REGULARLY • SOLICIT AND OBTAIN REGULAR FEEDBACK

  14. LIFE AFTER COURSEWORK • AFTER THE PROPOSAL, WORK ON YOUR THESIS • May be assigned Research /Teaching assignments by Departments • THESIS SUBMISSION • Your thesis will be examined by both internal and external examiners • Final Hurdle- The Oral Exam

  15. RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP • Period of award is 4 years ONLY • RS holders are required to be involved in the research work undertaken by the designated mentors for 6 hours a week

  16. FINANCIAL AID • Financial aid for four years is normal. Fifth year financial aid is based on performance. Financial aid for attending conferences is liberal.
