  1. What is Memorial Day? • It is a special day to remember and honor soldiers who died, especially those who died while fighting in a war • Memorial Day is a federal holiday.

  2. We also honor soldiers who are currentlyserving in the armed services: ♦Army ♦ Navy ♦Marines ♦Air Force and the ♦Coast Guard.

  3. When is Memorial Day? • It is on the last Monday in May. • This year 2014, it is on May 26th • May is in the spring.

  4. We celebrate… • Friends and relatives put flowers, wreaths, and flags on the graves of soldiers.

  5. Politicians give speeches • The President of the United States puts a wreath on the Grave of the Unknown Soldier. The grave is in Virginia at the Arlington National Cemetery

  6. Families have picnics or barbecues.

  7. ♦Schools ♦ government offices, ♦ post offices ♦ some stores are closed on Memorial Day.

  8. Memorial Day is the start of the summer recreational season in the United States.
