  4. Campus Fire Drills • Emergency Procedures and map in each classroom • Once a semester – practice • Evacuate to parking lots, away from buildings • Take all personal belongings with you • Wait for “all clear” from Campus Safety Officer or Administrator

  9. Parking on Campus • Purchase a semester permit on Class Web $30 (need License # of car, make and model) • Daily permits – $2 day sold in parking lots • Limited parking spaces in beginning of semester • Permits must be visible to avoid a ticket • Parking violations - $35! (speeding $55)

  11. Parking on Campus • Park head in, do not drive through • Observe speed limit – 10 mph! • Do not park in spaces marked “Staff”, “President” or Handicapped (blue) spaces.

Car Safety • Never leave valuables in sight • Always lock your doors and close windows • At night, park in well lit areas • If you think you are being followed, drive to the nearest Police station or well lit and populated areas like a grocery store or gas station • Do not talk on the cell or text while driving – illegal in California • Do not drive if you have drunk alcohol. Call a taxi or have a designated driver

  13. Personal Safety • Always be aware of your surroundings • Have confident, “purposeful” walk • If you go out at night, it is safer to go accompanied by a friend • Avoid high crime areas, especially at night • Do not carry large amounts of cash - $100 maximum • Learn to say “no”

  14. Home Safety • Always lock your door and windows in your apartment/home • Do not admit to being alone on the phone • Do not open the door to strangers – use a peep hole and always ask “who is it?” and ask for ID before opening the door

  15. Interacting with Police • At home, OK to ask for ID – badge • In car, drive to safe, well lighted place, stay in automobile with hands on steering wheel. Do NOT leave car • Remain calm and polite • Do not offer a “bribe”. Not done in USA

Earthquake Safety • Duck under a sturdy object like a desk or bed • Avoid windows, filing cabinets, bookcases, and heavy objects that could shatter or fall • Stay under cover until the shaking stops, then evacuate the building • Use the stairs, do not use the elevator • In the event of a major earthquake, turn off gas

  17. Disaster Prevention • Register your local address at your nearest Embassy or Consulate in the USA • Should be prepared in the event of a major emergency to be self-sufficient for 3 days (72 hours)

Emergency Kit • Have an Emergency Kit in your home and car • Kits should include items like: • water • medication • first aid kit • flashlight • battery powered radio • whistle • food • manual can opener • personal hygiene items, and • copies of passport, I-20, medical insurance and other important documents • Visit www.72hours.org or www.redcross.org for a complete list of recommended Emergency Kit items
