  4. Mavericks have a growth Mindset • The way your students think about intelligence will likely have a profound effect on their lifelong success.

  5. Mavericks have a growth Mindset • This is inspiring, because we can turn students into their own motivators. • We can motivate students to work out their brains and improve their intelligence.

  6. Growth mindset and faith • Understanding research requires us to take a new approach to the way we think about God’s creation. • We need to stop encouraging students with the belief that God has given them certain gifts that need to be used well. • Instead, God has given the most incredible gift to all people - the ability to improve! No one is prevented from growing their talent or intelligence, no matter where they begin. Improving yourself to enhance God’s kingdom.

  7. you are thinking, “but some people clearly have more talent than others” • You say, “Beethoven was a musical legend because of a combination of natural talent and hard work.” • I agree, but we must compliment the effort, and not the natural ability. • Otherwise, when a student reaches a challenge and fails then he or she will believe that the failure is a result of ability, not practice. • That mindset will make the student turn down challenges and avoid mistakes because every mistake signals a lack of ability rather than a need to learn or practice more.

  8. you are thinking, “but some people clearly have more talent than others” • Try this for a compliment: • You really enjoy playing the piano. How awesome is that? All the time you are spending practicing is making an enormous difference! It is exciting to watch you improve. • Your interest in books has really helped you grow into being a fantastic reader. Keep working out your mind and you will keep improving.

  9. Fixed mindset • Intelligence is an unchangeable quantity, therefore school is a performance

  10. Fixed mindset • Frequently criticizes the task or avoids participation by acting shy or being defiant • Hesitates to share or participate because of anxiety over performance • Acts like a challenging assignment is “dumb” or “pointless.” • When you hand back the fixed student’s test he or she is more focused on knowing other students grades and competing rather than knowing his or her mistakes and why they were incorrect

  11. Fixed mindset • Telling a student with a fixed mindset to “work harder” is counterproductive • He/she hears this “I am dumb because I need to try harder to get it.” • The fixed student believes the best student is the one that gets the answer with the least effort • “I didn’t even study and got an A.” • Blames failure on a lack of talent.

  12. Growth mindset • Intelligence is a changeable quality, therefore school is a place to practice, make mistakes, investigate, and learn.

  13. Growth mindset • Seeks out a challenge • Frequently participates in class because if the answer is wrong it is a learning moment, not a signal of insufficient talent • Promote a growth mindset by constantly reminding students that EFFORT = SUCCESS. • Failure is motivation to learn and improve. • Eager to take on a challenge. • Able to explain success and failure with strategic reasons for lack of success

  14. Fixed vs. growth mindset Fixed mindset Growth mindset Joyful achievement Intelligence is a changeable quality, therefore school is a place to practice, make mistakes, investigate, and learn. Effort will make me more intelligent (exercise my brain) and lead to success • Joyless achievement • Intelligence is an unchangeable quantity, therefore school is a performance • Effort may help me memorize more information or improve at a skill, but I cannot become more intelligent.

  15. Readers with a growth mindset • “Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body.” • Students want to see a reward for reading – hence the success of a program like Accelerated Reader. • Teaching a growth mindset makes the reward intrinsic because students believe they are strengthening their brain like a muscle. • -Neuron activity • The STAR Diagnostic test enables teachers to keep students motivated by analyzing their growth scores.

  16. Keys to reading motivation • The brain is a muscle that increases power when exercised, and loses power when not exercised. • Having personal opinions on books and making recommendations accordingly. • - Provide hand-selected options, rather than sending student to a huge stack • -You don’t have to read the books • -Read reviews on goodreads.com, then tell the student what the book is about, that it is well-reviewed, and about a topic he or she will find interesting

  17. Joyless  achievement vs. joyful  achievement http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPNeu07I52w

  18. Maverick Values: Building community, Cultivating character, and Marketing

  19. Building community • Opportunity: Harnessing the spirituality of every teacher to build a strong and supportive faith community of faculty, staff, and students. • Challenge: Every teacher has a different approach to spirituality and frames it in a different way. Students hear a lot of inspiring and meaningful material, but it does not stick because of inconsistency. • Idea: Unify every member of the St. Mary Magdalen Community around a set of 7 words that embody the spirit of the school.

  20. Building Community • What is a maverick? • (n) An unbranded animal • (n) An unorthodox or independent-minded person • We need to own our mascot! • Less than 10% of my students knew that a maverick was more than just a muscular horse.

  24. Six keys to developing character • Believe it and model it: Breathe life into the James Baldwin quote that, “The children are ours. Every single one of them…children have never been very good at listening to their elders but have never failed to imitate them.” • Name it: Give the intangible and often unnamed a name. • Find it: Introducing kids to real-world both religious and secular, and fictional examples that display the various character strengths • Feel it: Give kids the opportunity to feel the positive effects of living the values through recognition and perhaps awards • Integrate it: Creating lessons that involve the character values • Praise it: Provide people with growth mindset praise (precise, descriptive praise, focused on hard work and the idea of …YET)
