  2. Zarafa chronicles the incredible journey of one young giraffe from her homeland in southern Sudan to the center of Paris in the 1820’s. Originally intended as a gift from Muslim (Ottoman) viceroy of Egypt, Muhammad Ali, to the French king, Charles X, Zarafa’s story coalesces with the history of zoos, as royal menageries, and speaks to the curiosities that animals inspire in humans. Zarafa is a great example of historical non-fiction literature, complete with many teachable opportunities and class discussion material. Topics include: different political systems (empires), historical figures, time periods, cultural values and customs, inventions, geography, ethics , world religions, and many more. 8th Grade

Activity I As a class… • Discuss the terrain • Nile River: White Nile, Blue Nile • Northeastern Africa • Mediterranean Sea • Sicily • France Assessment: Map of Zarafa’s route • Recreate the journey of Zarafa and her entourage on a map! • Break up into small groups to make one large map, or make individual maps. • Indicate which parts were traveled by ship and which were traveled by foot. • Include map details: compass rose, scale for miles, and title.

Activity II Roman Numerals • Discuss usage of Roman numerals in history • Discuss Roman numerals 1-20 (I-XX) • Students will create a chart that corresponds English/Arabic numerals with Roman numerals I-XX. • Assessment: Students will create the above listed chart and then create their own numerical problem for a partner to switch with and solve.
