  1. Eternal life? - Transcendence, Transgression and Redemption Dr Donald Bruce Society, Religion and Technology Project Church of Scotland

  2. Transcendence Living for ever? Transcendence - a religious issue Is this body and this life all there is? Reductionist fallacy Complementarity of knowledge about humanity Outcomes of death …

  3. Outcomes from Death • Elimination - the individual ceases to be, chemicals reconstituted • Generational Memory - living on in people's memories who remember you • Culture (intergenerational memory) - records, stories, arts, seminal people, monuments • Incarnation - your life reconstituted as another life • Spiritual Resurrection - body dies, spirit lives on in a different dimension • Bodily Resurrection - rebirth, perfected in a supernatural dimension

  4. Transgression Going on and on living is not eternal life Eternal life has quality as well as timelessness Life in relationship with God, now and beyond death But something has gone wrong … Fall, right relationships, spirituality and life span Having too genetic a way of framing humanity? Redemption Life as gift A time to die … What’s worth researching? Not obscuring our mortality
