Colorado Headquarters and a National Reach • Approximately 83 employees here on Foothills Campus of Colorado State University- the CIRA “Headquarters” home to most administrative staff and leadership • Boulder, Colorado: approximately 44 employees collocated mostly in the Earth Systems Research Lab (ESRL)/Global Systems Division • Kansas City, Missouri: 8 employees collocated in the NWS Aviation Weather Testbed • College Park, Maryland: approximately 15 employees collocated with NESDIS in their new office • Other locations: about 5 employees in such places as WY, CA, MA, WI

Fast Facts and Stats • Established in 1980 • Department in the College of Engineering • Manage 3 complex programs including NOAA, DoI and DoD + individual grants and contracts • 97 total active projects currently; $18M/year • Administrative expenses quite lean in view of total research activity- less than 7%

The NOAA Cooperative Agreement “Complex Project” Designation A $13M/year, multi-PI program involving significant coordination of resources among all non-government partners, the NOAA Cooperative Agreement promotes involvement of students, post-docs, and scientists in NOAA-funded research: • Extensive Data Collection: Satellite Earth Station actively collecting and maintaining over 260 TB of data and data-mining tools for CIRA/NOAA scientists, NOAA colleagues and the atmospheric scientific community at large. • Extensive Travel Arrangements: ~12-15 individual trips of varying complexity in an average month. • Preparation of Large Reports: The annual compilation of year’s activities required by NOAA exceeds 400 pages and extensive administrative coordination. • Numerous Sub-Awards: There are 40 amendments per year on average, involving multiple PIs • Geographically Inaccessible to Normal Department Activities: 50 employees in Boulder, 15 more in MD, 8 in MO and others scattered nationally
