  2. Mark 1:13 • And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

  3. The Preacher/Teacher v. 1:14—Preaching the gospel v. 1:21—entered the synagogue and taught v. 1:38—that I may preach there also v. 2:2—and he preached the Word v. 2:13—he taught them

  4. Mark 1:14 • And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, Why is this a big deal?

  5. Levi—Matthew • Matthew’s Occupation • Publican (the hands-on collector) • a Jewish tax collector for the ancient Romans • By extension a Traitor • Receipt of Custom

  6. The Call of God Mark 2:15 • And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. • And he arose and followed him.

  7. All of Jesus’ Disciples Were Expected to Follow Him “Follow Me”

  8. Is Jesus in your Home? Mark 2:15 • And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

  9. Notice Following Jesus involves bringing Jesus into your home which will include:

  10. Jesus in the Home • Marriage • Budget • Parenting • Priorities • Friendships and Recreational Activities • Entertainment (music)

  11. Mark 1:15 • And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesusand his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

  12. Question Why did Matthew invite his “sinner” friends to his house that night?

  13. Fact We must be seeking relationships with unsaved people with the objective of bringing them to Jesus.

  14. Mark 1:16 • And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

  15. Question Why is it such a problem for the Scribes and Pharisees to hang out with “sinners?”

  16. Answer #1 Perhaps, they had a genuine concern for the impact these people could have on their own walk with God.

  17. Answer #2 Or, perhaps they had a false view of their own personal holiness and saw themselves as better than others.

  18. Turn to Isaiah 6:1-8

  19. Answer #3 Did they believe that keeping the law was part of their own salvation and that these people would have defiled them?

  21. Answer #4 Did these men not understand that all sin separates us from a Holy and Righteous God?

  22. Question What makes these sinners and this crowd unique?

  25. Mark 2:17 • When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: • I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Turn over to 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

  26. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 • Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? • Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

  27. Here’s what we have: Christ did not come to call the righteous, but the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

  28. 1 Corinthians 6:11 • And such were some of you: What were you? Were you a(n)?

  29. Were you a(n)? • fornicator • idolater • adulterer • effeminate • homosexual • thief • coveter • drunkard • reviler (railer) • extortion (swindler)

  30. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 • but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. How is this possible?

  31. Mark 2:17 • When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  32. Mark 1:15 • And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. Acts 20:21

  33. Acts 20:21 The Apostles Testified: • Both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

  34. Repentance is NOT: • My contribution to salvation • Quitting a particular sin • Turning over a new leaf • A recommitment to the things of God • Possible without the grace of God • Real w/o faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

  35. Repentance Toward God • Includes a change of mind about God: • God as Creator • God as Sovereign • God as Holy • God as Triune whose Son is Jesus Christ who came in the flesh, died, and rose from the dead • God as my Savior (complete dependency)

  36. Repentance Toward God 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 • For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idolsto serve the living and true God; • And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

  37. One True and Living God whose Son is Jesus Christ 1 3 Turn About 2 Turn #2 is not enough Idolatry

  38. Look at Romans 1:25 [They] changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

  39. Repentance From Self-Idolatry • Includes a change of mind about MYSELF: • I see myself as a sinner (sick) • I am convicted of my sin • I recognize I have nothing to add to my salvation • I understand my need for a doctor/savior • I have faith in Christ, as the Son of God, my Lord and Savior

  40. You ask: How do I repent? Answer: By Faith

  41. You ask:How will I know if I have repented: Answer: The object of your faith will be the Person and Work of Christ.

  42. You ask:How else can I know if I have repented: Answer: You will not worship any creature or created thing more than the Creator.

  43. You ask:Are there other ways I can know if I have repented? Answer: Yes, like Matthew, you will want others to meet your Savior Jesus.

  44. You ask:Is there anything else I can check to know if I have repented? Answer: Yes, like Matthew and his friends, you will want to learn more about God and His Word.

  45. Question Is God calling you to repentance this morning?
