  2. Learning Objectives • Review Current Statistics and Trends • Go over the 06/07 School Year Honor Education Program • Discuss different cadet forms in which an Official Statement is needed • Read and discuss two Honor Case Studies

Review • What is the Spirit of the Honor Code? • It is the concept of adhering to the honorable beliefs the Honor Code creates • How do you adhere to the Spirit of the Code? • By living Honorably because you believe it is the right thing • Where can the Classroom policy related to group work be found? • Either with the syllabus or the Professor • How can you insure your never accused of Plagiarism? • By giving the minimum citation Author, Title of the Book, Page Number – Honor Manual

Review • Who does a Company Honor Rep forward an accusation to? • The Battalion Honor Rep • What kind of vote is needed for a cadet to be found guilty of an Honor Violation? • All 10 members of the Honor Court most vote Guilty. • Who may represent an accused cadet as defense at an Honor Trial? • Any cadet except a 1st Semester Knob. • What are three options given to a cadet found guilty of an Honor Violation? • Accept the Findings and Expulsion, Appeal, or Resign.

  5. 1st Semester Trends:by Violation NOTE: These trends represent the total number of Cadets that were accused and later found Guilty of an Honor Violation by the Honor Court as the result of their Honor Trial so far in the school year.

  6. 1st Semester Trends: By Class NOTE: These trends represent the number of Cadets in each class that were found Guilty of committing an Honor Violation by the Honor Court so far this school year.

  7. Citadel Honor Statistics(Fall ’06 - Present) NOTE: The difference between the number of Cadets Accused of an Honor Violation and the Number of Cadets found Guilty/Not Guilty is due to cases being dropped during the investigation.

  8. The following slides provide information about the Honor Education program for the current school year. The increased amount of training for all classes (knob through senior) is to help instill honor and reinforce it throughout the duration of a cadet’s time at The Citadel.

  14. Official Statement Forms The following slides contain a couple different cadet forms in which an official statement is made by either a signature or being in possession of it (CP). Understand the importance of using these forms correctly, and truthfully, as they carry a significant weight to them.

  15. Charleston Passes (CP) • The abuse of this pass bears no different consequences than the misuse of any other official document. As stated on the rear of the pass: • “This is an official document. The use of this document constitutes an official statement. The misrepresentation of this card could violate the Cadet Honor Code.”

  16. Overnight/Weekend Leave • “Request that I be granted Overnight leave after last duty, Saturday/Friday, (date) and ending at 2230 Hours Sunday, (date). My signature below certifies that I understand that I must Academic, Conduct, Physically Proficient as of the date and time I sign out on leave.” • Ensure that you are proficient before you sign out on leave.

  17. Rifle Counts • “I verify that I have witnessed a physical inventoryconductedby both the Company Supply Sergeant and Armorer, or specified weekend duty team.” • You cannot just take the correct numbers and add them to the sheet. • You must verify the correct number of rifles are present.

  18. Case Study 1 • Cadet A lived in the Trailers during the overflow period. Around 0030 during general leave Cadet A received a phone call from her boyfriend. He said that he needed to speak with her right away in private and that he was outside the Barracks. Cadet A decided to bring him into her room. As they were talking Cadet A learned that her boyfriend’s parents had just died a few hours ago. Cadet A began consoling him as someone knocked on the door and asked “All clear?” Cadet A hurried to the door and met the cadet, who was the division inspector, doing All-ins. The Division Inspector stated he had heard two voices, and asked the Cadet A if there was anyone else in the room. Cadet A responded that she was the only one in the room and shut the door. Cadet A then continued to console her boyfriend and then let him head home when she thought he was capable. Cadet A then went to confront the division inspector, told him what happened and that she didn’t want to tell him someone was in the room because of her boyfriend’s situation. • Did Cadet A commit an Honor Violation?

Case Study 1 Review • Did Cadet A commit an Honor Violation? • Yes, Cadet A lied to the Division Inspector doing All-ins when she was asked if there was someone else in the room and she responded that there was not. • Did Cadet A have other options besides lying? • Yes, Cadet A was in a difficult situation but there were a lot of choices Cadet A could’ve made besides sacrificing her honor. What would you have done?

  20. Case Study 2 • Cadet C is a 2nd Semester 4th Class Cadet. Towards the end of the year Cadet C realizes that he has a poor grade in his English class and has a paper due the next day that hasn’t been started. Feeling like there is nothing he can do, Cadet C sends an email to his professor stating that the paper is attached, even though he knows it is not. Later, when Cadet C gets an ‘F’, he falsifies an email in Microsoft Outlook that appears like it has attachment and prints it out. Cadet C then confronts his teacher with the printout, stating that he had originally sent the paper but never received a grade. Cadet C’s professor informs the Honor Committee that their might be a possible Honor Violation. • Has Cadet C committed an Honor Violation?

  21. Case Study Review • Yes, Cadet C has lied to his Professor three times. The first time was when he sent the email to his Professor stating there was an attachment when he knew there was not. The second time was when Cadet C printed out the fake email and showed it to his Professor. The third time was when Cadet C confronted his Professor with the fake email still claiming he had sent the paper.
