  1. Electric CatfishBy:Carole Fitzwater • There is only one species of the Electric Catfish, and it is the only known catfish to have electrogenic powers. • The electric catfish ranges through tropical central Africa and the Nile Valley.

  2. The Catfish is one of the most unpredictable fish found. • When they are young they can get along with other fish peacefully, but as they get older they seem to become more aggressive.

  3. The Egyptians considered the catfish a special fish. • It was used in many pictographs in the ancient tombs. • They were also used for food, as today by many Africans.

  4. Its maximum length is about 4 feet, and can weigh up to 50 pounds. • Large electric catfish can discharge as much as 100 bolts.

  5. In the electric catfish the electric cells are located in a layer of fatty tissue just beneath the skin. • They stun prey that strays too close with their strong electric shocks.
