  1. SAFETY • The three items in a lab setting that can be the most dangerous are the chemicals, glassware, and any heat source.

  2. 1st SAFETY RULE • The Most important safety rule to always tell the teacher of any accident, spill, or fire.

  3. CHEMICAL CONCERNS • Eyes- Sometimes splashes may occur. To avoid any dangerous accidents. • SAFTEY goggles should be worn at all time!!

  4. CHEMICAL CONCERNS • Nose- Inhaling fumes can destroy the lining of your nose • Never put your face directly over a chemical a smell. • You should wave your hand over the beaker and direct a stream of air toward your nose.

  5. CHEMICAL CONCERNS • BE-SMART- Do not eat, drink, or store any material during in a lab setting. • It is usually posted on lab day.

  6. CHEMICAL CONCERNS • Skin is a protective covering for your body. • Most chemicals that we will use will not penetrate unbroken skin. • If you do spill any chemical on your skin you should immediately wash skin and continue to rinse for up to 10 minutes.

  7. CHEMICAL CONCERNS • In order to protect your feet shoes should be worn at all times. • Open-toed shoes are not considered safe. Do not wear them on lab days!!!

  8. GLASSWARE CONCERNS • Glassware can break!! Be Careful • If a beaker, test-tube breaks check yourself for any injuries and immediately inform the teacher.

  9. SAFETY SYMBOLS • Safety symbols are used world wide as a way to illustrate important information.(Danger and warnings.) • Pictures not words are used to avoid language barriers and illiteracy.

  10. FIRE CONCERNS • Many chemicals are flammable when in the liquid state or as fumes. • Your hair and clothing are a hazard if dangling to close to a fire source. • Be very careful when dealing with open flames or hotplates.

  11. FIRE CONCERNS • Cover fires in beakers/containers with fireproof pad or lid. • Provide and use fire extinguisher for large fires • Provide and use fire blanket • Smother a fire--Never use water to put out a fire in a lab.

  12. FIRE CONCERNS • On lab days you should make sure your hair is tied back. • It should NOT be long enough to get in the way of an open flame. • Your clothing should also be clear of any accidental contact of an open flame.

  13. FIRE CONCERNS • You should never throw water on an open flame. • Sometimes water can react in a negative way when mixed with certain chemicals.

  14. In case of an Emergency…. • Know where the following items are located in your classroom • Fire Extinguisher • Fire Blanket • Eye Station • Shower • Gas Shut Off • Electrical Shut Off

  15. IS IT CLEAN? • Never assume that a clean-looking surface is clean. • Assume it is contaminated and play it safe.

  16. Overall General Lab Rules Follow these rules every time you do a lab!!

  17. Always put on your goggles!! • Not every lab will require goggles but read/listen to instruction to determine if goggles are a necessary part of the lab.

  18. 2. Read Instructions • Know what you are doing. • Read the instructions carefully!

  19. 3. No Horseplay • Do the lab without playing around!!

  20. 4.) No unauthorized experiments. • Do NOT create your own experiment • Follow all instructions carefully.

  21. CLEAN-UP • Wash any materials used. Including glassware, spatulas, and etc… • Wash all surface areas used. Tabletops or desktop. • Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the lab.
