  1. Welcome to Parent Night 2014 Mrs. Riggins’ Class

  2. 4th Grade Expectations • Encourage independence and responsibility at home • Encourage organization • Encourage good study habits

  3. Parent/Teacher Conferences • I am always available to discuss your child in person or via telephone. • E-mail is the best way to set up a time and day for the conference. You may also call the school and leave a message. • Things we may need to discuss: • Grades • Behavior • Other concerns

  4. Transportation and Absence Notices • All transportation notes must be handwritten /typed and brought in the morning of the change. • Note should include your child’s first and last name and have your signature! • Absence excuses need to be brought to school within 3 days after the absence. These must also include your child’s first and last name.

  5. Curriculum • Math (number grade) • Hands-on AMSTI Math • Science (number grade) • Hands-on AMSTI Science • Reading • ARI (vocabulary, strategy, skill, fluency, word work) • Skill Marks (3= satisfactory, 2= progressing toward standard, 1= not meeting standards) • Alabama History (number grade) • Writing/Language Arts • Writing is skill based • Applying grammar skills in their writing and conferencing with teacher

  6. Reading Expectations for 4th Grade

Tests • Quick math quiz on Friday (10 problems weekly similar to the quick math problems can be found on our blog!) http://podcasts.shelbyed.k12.al.us/lhenderson/ • Vocabulary quiz on Friday (5 words which can be found in your child’s weekly newsletter) • Please use these words in context with your children at home so that they are more confident with using the words.

  8. Tests • Word Study (These words can be found in the weekly newsletter. We will be studying the word pattern during the week as well and practicing them in our writing. Weekly homework will be assigned to practice the spellings, but NO tests will be given.) • All other tests will have study guides that can be found in a plastic protector in your child’s red folder. Study guides will be handed out at least 3 days before the test, if not more.

Red folders • Left at Home and Right Back to School pockets • Please check these nightly and clean out accordingly • Reading Log – Thank you for doing such an excellent job on helping your child complete this each night (20 minutes a night on Mon – Thurs) • Study guides for all tests/quizzes can be found behind the study guide divider • Newsletter

  10. Blue Folders • Come home with child each Wednesday/Thursday • Please sign the parent signature sheet • Each student needs to make a learning goal for the next week based on his/her previous grades • Please return the folder the following day

Behavior • Positive behavior that I look for • Be respectful Be Safe • Be Responsible Be Cooperative • Be Polite Be a Worker • Rewards -Stamp System • Negative Behavior • Not Listening Being Uncooperative • Not following Directions Name Calling • Not Following Procedures Pushing • Not completing Work Touching Others • Budging in Line Missed HW • Excessive Talking • Misconduct outside Classroom • Excessive Negative Behavior Consequence: • Sent to office

  12. Negative Behavior Continued… • These infractions result in an office referral: • Disrespectful to an adult Fighting • Swearing Stealing • Abusing School Property Bullying • Harassment • Excessive Below the Line Behaviors

Behavior Consequences • 1st violation results in a warning. • 2nd violation results in silent lunch or loss of recess to be decided by the teacher. • 3rd violation results in parent notification through a discipline note. • 4th violation results in work time in another classroom. • 5th violation results in an office referral.

  14. Homework Policy • Standard Homework: • Weekly Quick Math Quiz (study each night) • Weekly vocabulary tests • Reading Log (due every Friday) • Study multiplication facts every night • Other homework, such as math practice, special projects, or study guides will be sent home throughout the week. I will notify you of upcoming tests in the newsletter. • Late or missing homework will result in a mark on the tracking sheet and must be turned in the following day.

  15. Snow Cone days • You can still purchase a snow cone pass for $30. Please send a check made out to CPES or cash. • These will be good through August 1, 2015, so if your child does not have 10 holes punched by the end of school they can use it during the summer! • You can also send in $3 in an envelope for the weeks we will be having snow cones. • Casey from Ground Up Coffee will be providing these and a percentage will go to benefit our school!
