  17. Introduction I am a big proponent of technology and I truly believe that it can be used to incite motivation and interest to foster learning. Technology competency has become a necessity in today’s world—to succeed in both work and academia, one must be proficient in technology. In the school setting, technology instruction must therefore start early and integration within the classroom must be intentional and meaningful. My intention was to showcase how literacy activities can be incorporated into core subjects, such as mathematics, in such a way that makes content fun, yet educational. Math is often an area that deters and confounds students, so I knew I wanted the lesson to be visually appealing and motivational, as well as educational, so I choose to adopt a top secret mission theme. Keeping my student’s age and possible limited technology experience in mind, I simplified the task as much as I possibly could. Although often overlooked, literacy and technology can be easily incorporated into the mathematics content area in meaningful and stimulating ways.

  18. Teacher Page Tips • This task would be best carried out as a whole group lesson with the use of a projector. The class can follow along as the teacher reads and work together to complete the missions. • To build prior knowledge, the teacher can read books like Brian P. Cleary’s The Mission of Addition to preview the addition process and get them thinking about addition keywords. • The teacher should also pre-teach or review simple computer commands such clicking, closing internet pages, etc.
