  2. S.O.M.I.Sternal-Occipital-Mandibular ImmobilizerManufactured byCAMP INTERNATIONAL

  3. INDICATIONS: • Cervical Arthritis • Post Surgical Fusions • Frequently Prescribed for use after HALO Removal • Stable Cervical Fractures • Rarely although sometimes prescribed for unstable cervical fractures • Cervical Fractures above C-4

  4. CONTRAINDICATIONS: • Unstable Fractures, Especially in Extension

  5. Relatively Effective in controlling movement in the sagittal plane • Very Effective in Controlling Flexion • Easily Donned and Doffed on Supine Patient • Use of Headband makes feeding and oral care less problematic • U-Shaped metal supports can be easily adjusted to particular positioning requirements

  6. Occipital Support Allen Wrenches and screws Items Supplied in the kit: Mandibular Support Sternal Yoke

  7. Start by fitting the yoke over the supine patients shoulders. The shoulder yokes can be bent to fit the patient and moved medially and laterally by loosening the screws found on the back of the yokes with the supplied Allen wrench.

  8. Move the straps so they cross in the back of the patient, being careful not to twist the straps as they cross. Bring around the sides of the patient so they meet at the lower buckles

  9. Fasten straps to the lower end of the shoulder yoke with the buckles, tighten to secure chest piece

  10. Carefully slide the occipital strut under the patients neck.

  11. Place the occipital pad under the patients head and test fit the uprights and the location of the ferrules. Adjust the bend of the uprights to fit in the slots on the chest piece. These can be easily bent by hand.

  12. Mark the location for the ferrules. Using the supplied allen wrench adjust the position of the ferrules and retighten securely.

  13. Reposition the occipital piece and rotate the latches medially to hold the strut in place.

  14. Place the mandibular piece in position and bend the upright and chin sections to fit the patient.

  15. Once the mandibular strut is shaped appropriately hold in position.

  16. Using the edge of the Allen wrench or a permanent marker , mark the hole for reference. This makes it easier to reposition the strut whenever it is removed.

  17. Rotate the locking mechanism medially to secure the mandibalr strut in position.

  18. Adjust and tighten the connecting straps on the side of the struts securely.

  19. The SOMI is now completely secured to he patient.

  20. To assist the patient to sit up place one hand below the neck of the patient and on a three count have the patient sit up while you assist.
