  2. What is Propagation? • the reproduction of plants by sexual or asexual methods • sexual reproduction: parent plants breed to produce seed • asexual reproduction: new plants are created from parts of the parent plant without seed

  3. Sexual Reproduction in Plants • flowers can be male or female or have both parts • stamen: male part of the flower • anther: produce the pollen (male sex cells) • filament: supports the anther • pistil: female part of the flower • stigma: where the pollen lands • style: pollen tube travels down • ovary: contains the ovum (egg)

  4. Asexual Reproduction • a new plant is created from part of the original plant • also known as “vegetative reproduction” • there are seven different methods

  5. Types of Vegetative Reproduction • runners - strawberry plants • bulbs - tulips and onions • tuber buds - potatoes • grafting - fruit trees • budding - fruit trees • cuttings - foliage plants • tissue culture - ornamental plants

  6. Advantages of Asexual Reproduction • creates offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant • a fast and easy way to create larger plants • especially good for specialty varieties that are hard to breed or are seedless • don’t need pollinators or other plants

  7. Disadvantages of Asexual Reproduction • offspring are genetically identical • need diversity for long-term species survival • disease can be more devastating

  8. What plant parts can be used for cuttings? • leaves • stems • roots

  9. Environmental Factors To survive, cuttings need: • bright light • favorable humidity • optimum temperature • well-drained medium
