In-use measurement of vehicles (SHED) Influence and preconditioning 7th February 2013

In-use measurement of vehicles (SHED) Influence and preconditioning 7th February 2013. Influences on vehicle emissions. Fuel: high evaporative fuel (in spring : winter fuel). In-use: short distance use (fuel residue at low temperature engine oil). Vehicle contaminated by: air-fresher.

  1. In-use measurement of vehicles (SHED) Influence and preconditioning 7th February 2013

  2. Influences on vehicle emissions • Fuel: • high evaporative fuel (in spring: winter fuel). • In-use: • short distance use (fuel residue at low temperature engine oil). • Vehicle contaminated by: • air-fresher. • use of cockpit-spray. • gasoline can. • brake cleaner. • other use of high hydrocarbon emission source around the vehicle (for example methanol). • Vehicle DIY reconstruction. • Repair shop chemicals • Cleaning solvents • Fuel spill in filler pocket • Others. • Service interval incomplete, no use of genuine parts (fluids, filters, …) • Vehicle background: • New Tyres. • Interior. • Surface treatments (solvents) • Engine (fuel/other fluids). • Window washer fluid. • Non-fuel Leaks (engine cooling system, air conditioning system). • Canister: • Conditioning. • Breakthrough (high loading/low purge time).

  3. Influences on vehicle emissions Activities to secure representative emission level during in-use testing • Rejection of vehicles which are contaminated by: • air-fresher. • use of cockpit-spray. • gasoline can. • other use of high hydrocarbon emission source around the vehicle. • service interval incomplete, no use of genuine parts (fluids, filters, …). • vehicles background (baking of vehicles at 41°C with regular purge of SHED). • Engine control management reading for detected failures and solving. • Windows washer fluid change against hot pure water. • Check overfill line within filler inlet is completely free of residues or flush the hose with hot water. • Changing of engine oil to terminate fuel influence (short distance use). • Pressurize evap-system (from canister side), testing for leaks (pressure drop) in a sufficiently constant temperature ambient environment, FID sniff test around the vehicle at characteristic regions. • Change to stabilized tires if 1 – 4 tires are to new.

  4. Vehicle background

  5. Tyres background

  6. Window washer fluid background

  7. Conclusions • Background mainly response for vehicle emissions. • Lowest background emissions for carefully measurement. • Vehicle background is generally stable after 2 years, stabilized level depend on vehicle interior, baking of in-use vehicles at 41°C for 48h, steam clean of engine, vehicle. • Tyres background is generally stable after 2 years, change of aged tires for SHED use only. • Window washer fluid (especially methanol) must be carefully changed against pure water. • Check overfill line within filler inlet is completely free of residues or flush the hose with hot water. • Other contaminations of fluids like brake fluid, radiator fluid, refrigerant must be not present. • Service interval complete, use of genuine parts (fluids, filters, …). • New engine oil. • Adequate driving cycle need for definitely canister conditioning (well purge reduce bleed emissions).
