  1. Extended EssaySession 1 Sydney workshop 14-15 July 2011

  2. Extended Essay of 4000 words The nature of the task • 4000 words • ‘an in depth study of a focused topic chosen from the list of approved Diploma Programme subjects’ • ‘Leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing’ • Follow prescriptions from the EE Guide carefully. Note new guide for 2013, but few changes. • Suggested Student time on essay is 40 hours

  3. The Hexagon

  4. The place of the EE in the IB Diploma • The idea of the holistic education • A way to add breadth • A way to deepen studies • An opportunity to work with a mentor – one to one basis • Acquaints diploma candidates with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected by universities • The opportunity to investigate a topic of personal interest

  5. The EE and the MYP Personal Project Similarities Differences

  6. The relationship of the EE to the IB Mission and the Learner Profile

  7. Inquiry learning and learner centredinstruction in the DP • NOT student designed curriculum • Values the learning process • Various models but in the DP ‘inquiry’ learning seems to equate with learner centred instruction and incorporates elements of several models playing complimentary roles within the classroom • An important aspect is that the teacher remains a key element in all aspects of the DP

  8. The role of the teacher : Structured TO Guided TO Open

  9. The Extended Essay: the culminating experience of inquiry • ‘Inquiries as rites of passage’ (Hickey in Walker 2011 p. 71) This idea applies to all 3 IB Programmes. • Check EE in The Diploma Programme: a basis for practice. P. 6 • Think of an example of an inquiry for an EE in your subject area that you would like to do if you were a DP student.
