  1. Phone Booth Estimation Study the photo at the right. Decide on a reasonable method for estimating the number of students packed into the telephone booth. (Note that it is not possible to count the students!!) Describe/suggest an experimental method you could use to test your estimate without actually putting students into an old style phone booth (even if you could still find one!?!)

  2. Dimensional Analysis A war between the United States and Iraq has broken out. The American Army starts out with 275,000 troops compared to only 170,000 enemy soldiers. The American Army can kill 5,000 enemy troops per encounter while only having 40 casualties of there own. This ratio occurs every 8 days. How many days will it take until all the enemy troops are removed? How many U.S. casualties would there be?

  4. Midwest Rat Invasion • On November 13, 1956 a plague of 325,000 mice invaded the Midwest. The plague only had one job in mind: To wipe out the rural farmer’s grain supply stashed within the barns. Consider only Cloud County and assume that 95% of the total plague consumed the county’s grain supply. The number of packs in each wave was set at one hundred. Each pack contains 500 mice and each wave required 10 minutes to consume grain and clear out. One mouse can eat about 20% of its body weight and each mouse weights 20 grams. Use factor label conversion to show computations for each of the following: • Given/Resolved Information: • 95% of 325,000 = 308,750 mice1 wave = 100 packs1 pack = 500 mice1 wave / 10 minutes20% of 20 grams = 4 grams • 1. How many minutes does it take for the plague to occur? How many hours? • 2. How many pounds of grain did the plague consume? • 3. How many wave were there?

How many minutes does it take for the plague to occur? How many hours?a) 308,750 mice (1 pack/500 mice)(1 wave/100 packs)(10 min./1 wave) = 61.75 minutesb) 61.75 minutes (1 hour/60 minutes) = 1.03 hours • 2. How many pounds of grain did the plague consume?a) 308,750 mice (4 grams/mouse)(1 lb./454 grams) = 2720.26 lb. grain • 3. How many wave were there?a) 308,750 mice (1 pack/500 mice)(1 wave/100 packs) = 6.175 waves

  6. Gas Station Attendant • I work at a gas station, which has an 8,000 gallon gas tank for our regular unleaded. The tank is 8ft deep. On an average day we sell 6 inches of regular unleaded gasoline. We have to order more gasoline 3 days before we run out to keep business going. • If today is Friday August 20th and the tank is full what date will I have to order more gasoline? • How many gallons per inch fit in the tank? • How many gallons does the gas station sell a day?
