  4. Centre of Expertise for Waters (CREW) • Commissioned April 2011 • Runs for 5 years with 1 year rolling projects & call down service • Programmes focus on basic and strategic research • Maintains capacity; new methodologies; new frontiers • CREW about translating existing knowledge for immediate policy needs • Creating new products through: • Synthesis, reviews, new applications, new data combinations • Synergistic partnerships • www.crew.ac.uk

  5. RESAS: Programme 1 – Environmental Change Theme 2: Water & Renewable Energy Work Package 2.4 Methods for mitigating and adapting to flood risk Deliverables: • 2.4.1: Evidence and demonstration of the effectiveness, costs and benefits of NFM measures in a Scottish Context • 2.4.2: Tools and Evidence to help practitioners assess where NFM is feasible and appropriate • 2.4.3: Understanding and modelling seasonal shifts in the environment and the implications for flooding and water conservation

  6. Work Package 2.4 (Cont) • Deliverables • 2.4.4: Barriers, opportunities and routes for implementing NFM via behavioural and land use change by communities, landowners and planners • 2.4.5: Identification of opportunities for flood risk management measures to deliver multiple objectives (including flooding, water quality, economy, amenity and biodiversity); • 2.4.6: Identification of evaluation of potential negative impacts of flood risk management activities, including those on animal health and welfare and how they may be managed

  7. Work Package 2.4 Projects • Project 1: Catchment based assessment and demonstration of Natural Flood Management (NFM) opportunities and constraints (Deliverables 2.4.1, 2.4.5 and 2.4.6) • Project 2: Understanding past, present and future characteristics of agricultural catchment adaptation and implications for resilience for flooding and water conservation (Deliverables 2.4.3 and 2.4.6)

  8. Work Package 2.4 Projects (Cont) • Project 3: Understanding the barriers, opportunities and routes for implementing NFM (Deliverable2.4.4) • Project 4: The development of guidance for practitioners as to options for NFM that are feasible and appropriate (Deliverable 2.4.2) • Project 5: Multiple Benefits of NFM (Deliverable 2.4.5 & 2.4.6)

  9. SEPA Strategic Research Strategy

  10. SEPA Future Research Priorities • Tracking and communicating cumulative uncertainties when assessing flood risk • Use of probabilistic tools and messages in flood forecasting and warning services (& the tools that underpin these) • How to value the impacts of flooding on various receptors i.e. CNI, roads, transport, agriculture
