  1. Managing Your Cancer Care During an Emergency How to Manage Cancer Care in an Emergency? An emergency situation is characterized by fire, earthquake, flood, or hurricane. It is challenging for every individual to survive and manage the condition. However, it becomes even more difficult to stay protected if you are a cancer patient. You may have scheduled appointments, tests, follow-ups, dose schedules, and others. In this article, you will learn how to manage cancer care during an emergency. Plan your activities  Your activities to deal with the emergency conditions should be predetermined. Talk to your healthcare team and discuss the natural disasters that can hamper your cancer care routine.  A natural or man-made disaster can occur with hardly any sign or notice. For example, you may need to rush to a safer place in case of a bad storm. It may take you some time to get back to your home due to power outages and flooding. Therefore, in such a case, you must plan your activities so that your medical condition doesn’t get worse in any way.  Make plans with your family members regarding the available resources and the human resources who can provide help during an emergency.

  2. Make a list of medications you may need in an emergency. Besides that, consult your doctor regarding the things you may need if you miss a scheduled appointment with the healthcare team.  Prepare a kit  To manage your cancer care during an emergency, assemble a couple of things and prepare a kit.  You may require certain medical equipment like machines for testing blood sugar levels, blood pressure levels, and heart rate.  Make sure to add first-aid components including hand sanitizers, antibiotic cream, and disinfectant.  Keep medicines and other necessary medical supplies to last for at least 10 days. Plus, do not forget to keep enough water and food. Carry your medical card Prepare a medical card and mention the following:  Your name and contact number  Your caretaker’s name and contact number  Your doctor’s name and contact number  The type of cancer you have  The stage of cancer you have Stay infection-free  Infections can easily hit patients with cancer. This is because of low immunity and altered response to foreign elements like bacteria, viruses, and others. Therefore, it is important to avoid the consumption of contaminated food and water.  Wash your hands with soap often. Do not touch dirty articles. Disinfect every article you purchase before using it.  Do not eat food items that are undercooked or are not preserved properly due to power outages.  Get vaccinated against the infections you are prone to. A very common example of the same is COVID-19. Furthermore, consult your medical practitioner regarding other aspects to take care of during an emergency.
