Neoplastic Fever in Cancer Patients

As you may know, cancer patients are prone to developing other health problems. From being an easy target of opportunistic infections to being the home of low immunity, they become vulnerable to diseases. Neoplastic fever in cancer patients is a very common condition. It is simply defined as a rise in body temperature that is caused by cancer (malignancy). In simple words, neoplastic fever refers to the disease triggered by abnormalities in the immune system due to the activity of a cancer tumor (neoplasm). Some doctors call it a side effect of cancer medicines though.

  1. Neoplastic Fever in Cancer Patients As you may know, cancer patients are prone to developing other health problems. As per some studies, cancer and fever are related to each other in a number of ways. Fever can be a sign of cancer; cancer can cause fever in some patients; certain cancer medicines can increase your body temperature. Criteria for diagnosis of neoplastic fever:  Body temperature over 100.04°F at least twice a day.  Having a fever for more than two weeks.  No evidence (physical changes) of infection.  Lack of response to antibiotic medications for fever.  Lack of evidence in imaging tests and laboratory examinations. Which cancers cause Fever? Neoplastic fever can be caused by any type of cancer. However, patients with lymphoma face this condition the most. The following can be its potential reasons:  Releasing cytokines (substances that control the activity of immune cells) from cancer cells.

  2. Gaining access to mononuclear cells. Necrosis (death) of tumoral tissue. Obstructing a hollow duct that leads to proximal infection. Drug fever caused by chemotherapy and antibiotic drugs.     What are its symptoms? Neoplastic fever can come with certain symptoms. This depends solely upon the cause of the condition.  An increase in body temperature.  Chills or shivering  Sweating  Muscle aches  Headaches  Constant sweating  Severe tiredness  Dehydration  Loss of appetite How is it treated? Treating fever in cancer patients has no hard and fast rule. Medicines like non-steroidal drugs (NSAIDs) can be used for managing the condition. Naproxen is one such therapy. Treatment of neoplastic fever can be initiated at home. However, it is important to consult a doctor in severe cases. Different countries have different treatment trends for cancer and related conditions. For instance, supportive care plans and cancer treatment Thailand differs from that of other countries in the same region. This depends upon the patients’ preference, type of cancer that is commonly diagnosed in people of that region, and environmental conditions. Note: Do not take any medicine to manage or treat neoplastic fever without consulting your medical team. Make sure to learn the risks and benefits of the medicine you consume.
