The Connection Between Diabetes and Cancer

If you prepare a list of people who are prone to diabetes and people who are at an increased risk of cancer, you will find that the majority portion is common. Especially, type 2 diabetes has been linked to cancer as per many medical professionals. Common cancers that can develop in diabetes patients are cancers of the colon, breast (in postmenopausal women), pancreas, liver, and bladder. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, is thought to have a strong connection with diabetes.

  1. The Connection Between Diabetes and Cancer If you prepare a list of people who are prone to diabetes and people who are at an increased risk of cancer, you will find that the majority portion is common. What exactly is Diabetes? Diabetes is a metabolic disease that leads to a high blood sugar level. You might have heard about the role of insulin. It is a hormone that helps in managing the sugar levels in the body. When you have diabetes, your body lacks the ability to either produce or use insulin. This condition is characterized by excessive thirst and urination. The role of DNA A number of studies show a connection between cancer and diabetes that is based on your DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). As you may know, cancer develops when some gene mutations cause the uncontrollable growth of cells. Furthermore, too much sugar in the blood, i.e., hyperglycemia can significantly result in damaged DNA. The normal repair functions are thus suppressed. This creates an opportunity for the cancer cells to grow and spread. Diabetes and Cancer

  2. Both types of diabetes (type 1 and 2) put individuals at high risk of developing cancer. More than men, women are more vulnerable to the condition. The most common cancers that can affect women suffering from diabetes are leukemia (blood cancer), stomach cancer (gastrointestinal stromal tumors), oral cancer, and kidney cancer. In some cases, cancer can also give rise to diabetes. Different types of cancer treatment can increase blood sugar levels in the body. This, however, also depends upon the environmental conditions and kinds of cancer medicines. Compare cancer treatment in Malaysia with any other region of the same area and you will find a difference! This is why patients diagnosed with diabetes are often prescribed regular screenings for various cancers. However, multiple conditions associated with diabetes can be managed at home using oral medicines and insulin. Apart from that, regular exercise and a low-sugar diet help in maintaining normal blood sugar levels. Consult your health professional if you think you are at risk of developing diabetes or cancer. Do not skip any medical appointment or therapy because of something you’ve read here. Source: http://writeus.me/the-connection-between-diabetes-and-cancer/
