  1. Louisiana’s Implementation of Common Core State Standards Implementation Update and Crosswalk Documents The Louisiana Department of Education March 2012

  2. CCSS ELA/Math Training Agenda • Implementation Plan Timeline Review • A Crosswalk • Grade-Level Content Comparisons • Format • How to Read Documents • Recommended Uses • Next Steps

  3. Implementation: Changing Our Expectations • By 2014-15, all existing GLEs will be replaced by Common Core State Standards: • All state standardized testing will align to new standards • New standards and curriculum will be phased in over time. No changes – current curriculum, current assessments Curriculum – some GLEs deleted, some GLEs remain, some CCSS added Assessments – based on GLEs that remain in curriculum Curriculum and assessments based on CCSS only

  4. Changing Expectations for Our Students: What Does This Mean For Next Year? How are standards changing? • GLEs that do not align with CCSS at each grade are deleted • New CCSS are introduced each year during the transition How is the curriculum changing? • Transitional curriculum for ELA/Math align to transitional standards available for grades 2-12 How are assessments changing? • Assess content that aligns with both CCSS and GLEs for each grade/course • New PARCC Assessments fully implemented in 2014-15 • Writing prompt will be a key instructional shift-writing in response to reading informational text

  5. Common Core State Standards Terminology of the CCSS

  6. ELA CCSS Terminology Sample ELA Standards Focus Topics from College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards RL.K.3

  7. ELA CCSS ID Numbers RI . 3 . 2 The ELA Common Core State Standards document provides each strand name and its abbreviation. Grade Strand Standard Number Reading Standards for Informational Text K–5 Key Ideas and Details Grade 3 students: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.

  8. CCSS Mathematics Terminology

  9. Math CCSS ID Numbers 4.NBT.5 The math Common Core State Standards document provides each domain name and its abbreviation. Grade Domain Standard Number Number and Operations in Base Ten Grade 4 students: Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

  10. Common Core State Standards Crosswalk Documents Two- Year Transitional Phase Start Date: April 20, 2012

  11. What is a Content Standards Crosswalk? • An alignment study to analyze the degree of match or overlap between two sets of standards • LDOE contracted with WestEd to create an alignment study between CCSS and Louisiana’s GLEs • ELA and Math • 2nd-High School grade levels • Serves as the official crosswalk for determining transitional curriculum and blueprints for transitional assessments • Not Included: ELA Literacy Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects • Terminology is based on CCSS

  12. LDOE Grade-Level Content Comparison Documents ELA and/or Math Purpose: To illustrate how the CCSS and the Louisiana’s GLEs align by grade to provide teachers a “road map” of how to implement the CCSS during the transitional phase of implementation.

  13. The Transitional Documents • Locate the following directions • How to Read ELA Grade-Level Content Comparison Document • How to Read Math Grade-Level Content Comparison Document • Each contains four pages • Page 1: Background, Criteria, and Purpose for implementation of the transitional curriculum and assessments To ensure full alignment to CCSS” • Page 2: Content to be Added to Grade Level • Page 3: Content to be Deleted from Grade Level • Page 4: Content that will Remain the Same at the Grade Levelthrough the transitional years • Follow along with either the ELA or math document

  14. Page 1: ELA and/or MathBackground- WestEd Alignment Studyanalyzed the degree of match or overlap between the content of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Louisiana’s Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs) for each grade.A GLE considered a match to the CCSS if it met one or more of the following criteria:1. The GLE reflects the same concepts and skills embodied in the CCSS.2. The central idea and/or intended complexity of a GLE is consistent with the central idea/ or intended complexity with the CCSS.3. The GLE addresses the intended content of the CCSS at a fundamental level. Grade-Level Content Comparison Document
