  1. Math 5Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will learn about mixed numbers and improper fractions.

  3. How many $0.15 pencils can Ahmed buy for $2.00? Math Warm-up Pause lesson to work.

  4. How many $0.15 pencils can Ahmed buy for $2.00? Math Warm-up - ANSWER $2.00 ÷ $0.15 13 pencils

  5. In this lesson we will answer the question: How are mixed numbers and improper fractions related?

  6. 6 Vocabulary Review divisor- the number that a dividend is divided by 24 ÷ 4 = 6 4 24

  7. Vocabulary Review fraction – a symbol, such as ¾, used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is divided into equal parts. A fraction can name a part of a whole, a part of a set, a location on a number line, or a division of whole numbers.

  8. Vocabulary - Review numerator - the number above the fraction bar in a fraction. denominator - the number below the fraction bar in a fraction. numerator 1 2 denominator

  9. Vocabulary mixed number – a whole number and a fraction Ex.

  10. Vocabulary improper fraction – a fraction whose numerator is greater than or equal to its denominator (the fraction is 1 whole or more) Ex.

  11. Connecting to Previous Learning You have already learned how to find equivalent fractions. Today, we will use a similar method to move between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

  12. You can use either an improper fraction or a mixed fraction to show the same amount. For example 1 3/4 = 7/4, as shown here:

  13. You know that 20 ÷ 9 = 20 9 This is an improper fraction because the numerator is greater than the denominator. Improper fractions can be rewritten as mixed numbers!

  14. You can write 20 ÷ 9 as a mixed number. You know that 20 ÷ 9 = 20 9 Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator. 2 9 20 18 2

  15. You can write 20 ÷ 9 as a mixed number. You know that 20 ÷ 9 = 20 9 Step 2: Write the remainder as a fraction. The divisor is the denominator! 2 2 9 20 18 2 2 9

  16. 2 2 9 • Write as an improper fraction. Step 1: Multiply the denominator of the fraction by the whole number. 2 9 2 2 x 9 = 18 x

  17. 2 2 9 • Write as an improper fraction. Step 2: Add the numerator of the fraction. + 2 9 2 18 + 2 = 20 x

  18. 2 2 9 • Write as an improper fraction. Step 3: Write using the same denominator. 2 2 9 20 9

  19. 2 2 9 • Write as an improper fraction. 2 2 9 20 9 =

  20. Document Camera Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page.

  21. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Write the improper fraction as a mixed number, or the mixed number as an improper fraction. 20 9 4. 5. 6. 2 1. 2. 3. 2 9 2 2 9 20 9 20 9 2 2 9

  22. Lesson Review Steps to write a mixed number as an improper fraction: Divide the numerator by the denominator. Write the remainder as a fraction.

  23. Lesson Review Steps to write an improper fraction as a mixed number: Multiply the denominator of the fraction by the whole number. Add the numerator of the fraction. Write using the same denominator.

  24. In your Math Notebook Quick Check Is 5/5 an improper fraction? Explain your reasoning. Simone thinks that 8/4 is not an improper fraction because 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Is she correct? Explain.

  25. Quick Check – ANSWERS Is 5/5 an improper fraction? Explain your reasoning. Yes, because the numerator is equal to the denominator. Simone thinks that 8/4 is not an improper fraction because 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Is she correct? Explain. It is an improper fraction because the numerator is greater than the denominator. Also, the value of it is greater than one.
