  2. What is Matrimony? • Celebrates the couple’s commitment to share the whole of their life together • To reveal God’s love to themselves, their children and others through their marriage

  3. The Four Concepts • Mutual Self-giving • Convenantal faithfulness • The becoming of one’s real self • creativity

  4. Mutual Self-Giving • Wherever there is human love and friendship, God is revealed • A symbol of God’s total gift of self to humanity. • A communion of the whole of life.

  5. The Faithfulness of a Covenant • Solemn promise between two parties • The community of personal partnership between God and humans. • Bound to each other by promises of love and faithfulness

  6. 4 Characteristics of Faithfulness >Permanence> God is faithful, the marriage bond is “until death do us part” >Constancy> being constant> living through life’s ups and downs, joy and hardship.For Better Or Worse >Loving Confrontation> Caring enough to confront problems honestly ,lovingly

  7. 4 Characteristics of Faithfulness> Con’t >Lived Values> actively living out values and priorities. >“Where you spend your time is where you spend your life And where you spend your life is where you spend your love.”

  8. Becoming One’s Real Self • Honesty • Sensitivity • Stronger Identity • Married couples become persons they never would have become if it were not for their marriage to each other.

  9. Creativity • God’s love is creative and always brings forth goodness and new life • Love is meant to lead to something wonderful beyond itself. • Love not shared with others becomes stagnant.

  10. The Ritual of MatrimonyPages 271-277 • Not just a ceremony that is just a one day event. • It IS the couple’s sharing of their whole lives together. • The primary symbols in the sacrament is the couple themselves! • It is THEY not the priest or deacon that are the ministers of the sacrament

  11. Ritual Continued • Ideally, for Catholics, the ritual takes place within the celebration of the Mass. • Marriage between and Catholic and a non-Catholic often NOT during a Mass. Location: • Catholic parish church • In another Christian church, with permission • Sometimes in another location, with permission

  12. 3 Rites • The rite for celebrating Matrimony during Mass • The rite for celebrating Matrimony outside Mass (which can be used for the marriage of a Catholic and a baptized non-Catholic) • The rite for celebrating Matrimony between a Catholic and an un-baptized person.

  13. Why the Rules?? • To avoid abuses of the marriage laws. • At one time the Church was the most stable influence in society and its desire was to protect people from any abuse of the marriage law. (like forcing someone to marry)

  17. Priest To bring us back into faithful relationship with God. Jesus as priest sacrifices himself for us. Prophet Reminds us of God and God’s ways. To reveal God’s presence in word and deed. Servant-leader One who serves Loving service to one another >Lead by example Priest, Prophet, Servant -leader

  18. Bishops • Are the successors of the Apostles • All bishops in the world form what is called the “college” of bishops • bishops+ pope+ sign of the oneness of the universal church. What do Bishops do?

  19. 1) Lead worship and sacraments (priestly function) 2) Teaching and applying the truth of the Gospel to their own times. ( prophetic function) 3) Pastoral governance .oversee the needs of the diocese . See to the spiritual needs of the people .foster a unity of faith. ( servant-leader function) What do bishops do?

  20. Co-workers with the bishop of their docese. Share responsibility for worship, teaching, governing ( Parish/school) Deacons> Directly connected with a bishop they serve by helping him and his co workers, the priests, to carry out their tasks. What do Priests and Deacons do?
