  1. Is the hero introduced in his ordinary world? YES! He is introduced in Sweden with the Geats. See “Beowulf” from textbook.

  2. Is the hero called to adventure? NO! See “Beowulf” from the textbook. He TELLS his king and elders he is going.

  3. Is the hero is reluctant at first? NO! He is not reluctant because he wants fame and fortune.

  4. Does the hero need encouragement by the wise old man/woman? NO! He is very clear that he thinks he is capable of doing this by himself (self- confident, arrogant). See “Beowulf” “Battle w/ G” “Battle w/Gmom” “B’s Last Battle”

  5. Does the hero encounters tests and helpers? Who/What? YES! He did encounter tests and helpers. He encountered Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and the Dragon. While a few men helped with the first two,onlyWiglaf helped with the dragon.

  6. Does the hero reaches the innermost cave? Yes! Grendel’s Mother’s underwater cave and the Dragon’s cave.

  7. Does the hero endures the supreme ordeal(s)? YES! Grendel Grendel’s Mother Dragon He faced many monsters/villans and lived through all but one.

  8. Does the hero seizes the “reward”? YES! He had G’s head, the sword, endless treasure, and ALL THE GLORY!

  9. Was the hero required to be tested again on the road back to his ordinary world? YES! He’s tested with G’s mom because that was not in the original plan.

  10. Did the hero undergo a resurrection/rebirth? YES! He’s reborn into the King of the Geats when he returns from Denmark.

  11. Did the hero return with the rewards? YES! He returns with fortunes, glory, fame, and the title of KING!
