  3. Understanding the Missionary Call The need 1/3 of the planet’s population has never heard the gospel 50,000 die each day and go into a Christless eternity 6,000 people die each day due to lack of clean drinking water 26,000 children die each day from hunger related diseases

  4. Understanding the Missionary Call Our responsibility Jesus’ command: panta te ethne Jesus’ provision: The church Jesus’ promise: That He will be with us Coca-Cola vs. the Church Need vs. Call Call vs. Guidance

  5. Knowing God’s Will Is God’s will a tiny dot on a huge football field? If there is a specific will, how far does it extend? Who to marry, where to live, what clothes to buy…and what to wear to work on Wednesday? As we walk with the Lord, we come to know the mind of God. We hear the still, small voice, and we know His heart, but we still come to Him and lay before Him our major decisions and life choices asking for guidance. God’s will is not a tightrope, it is the wide-open field.

  6. Knowing God’s Will Know God Some believers are so concerned with knowing the will that they miss the Source. Proverbs 1:7, James 1:5 Know God’s Word The Bible gives assurance of God’s promises to His children The Bible reminds us of God’s faithfulness to those who seek Him Proverbs 3:5-6

  7. Knowing God’s Will Pray Prayer brings our heartbeat in tune with God’s and brings us to Him in loving worship This helps us to know God more fully and see our situations as He sees them Seek Counsel Turn to those who know you well and who have shown wisdom in their own choices. Proverbs 11:14, 24:6

  8. Knowing God’s Will Examine Life Experiences God has allowed everything that came into your life. God knows what you need in order to do what He has made you to do. Consider Your Circumstances An open or closed door is not necessarily clear guidance from the Lord Consider your circumstances in light of what you know of God and His Word.

  9. Knowing God’s Will Consider God’s Timing We should consider family and practical realities that will be impacted by the decision we are considering. Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 Identify the Desires of Your Heart God began to form your personality before your first breath (Psalm 139:16) God is able to place in your heart a desire for the plan He has for your life. (Psalm 37:4) Yet, guard your heart. (Prov. 4:23)

  10. Who does God call to missions? Have an awareness of the needs of the nations and the commands of Christ Have a concern for the lost Have a commitment to God Have your church’s blessing and commissioning Have the Spirit’s gifting Have the unquenchable, indescribable yearning to go- the sense of ought.

  11. Timing & the Missionary Call Do the call or the specifics of the call change over time? God’s calling vs. God’s guidance The Damascus Road vs. the Macedonian “call” “Career” vs. “Short-Term” The missionary call is a lifetime call. The ways in which you may express that call will vary throughout your life.

  12. Timing and the Missionary Call What causes delays to fulfilling the missionary call? Raising support Paying off debt Obtaining required education Waiting for a spouse to feel called Addressing physical concerns and needs

  13. Timing and the Missionary Call How should you respond to delays to fulfilling the call? Seek to live the missionary call with all you are right where you are ESL Short-term trips Educate yourself Learn a language Get as close to Jesus as you can and stay there.

  14. Are you called? There is a personal missionary call, so personal that no one else can truly comprehend it Many mistakenly assume that it must come in a vision, an audible voice, undeniable circumstance, or other supernatural revelation. You cannot analyze your missionary call by comparing against an objective list of required components Anxiety is understandable, yet do not let fear decide for you.

  15. Are you called? Taking time to work through the issues of the missionary call and knowing God’s will is wise. Hearing God’s missionary call has a great deal to do with what you are listening for. If God is calling you to missionary service, embracing that call will bring many other challenges, decisions, and need for discernment. Learn to pursue Him and His will now, so that He can lead you through the expression of your call more easily.

  16. Key Questions “What is it that’s not being done, that ought to be done, that I could do, and that if it were done would result in greater glory to God and the advance of Christ’s Kingdom?” How can you glorify God? “By loving Him and doing what He commands.” “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” –Psalm 37:4 What are the desires of your heart?
