  1. The Silent Way • SPA 414: Applied Linguistics Amanda Varno, Rachel Leombruno, Tori Gaunt

  2. History: • Created by Dr. Caleb Gattegno in the 1970’s. • Known for using Cuisenaire rods. • It is a method of teaching language where the teacher stays silent.

  3. Cuisenaire Rods

  4. What Does It Look Like? • Teacher should be silent as much as possible. • Learners are encouraged to use as much language as possible. • Learners work with resources given and nothing else. • Learners are responsible for what they learn.

  5. Mini Lesson: • The teacher will have letters corresponding to colored rods, for example A = Red, B = Yellow, C = Blue and so on. The teacher will point to the colors in order for the students to sound out the word. For example, the teacher would like students to say the word “gato.” The teacher would point to the color that represents the letter G, then the teacher would have the students sound out the letter G. Then the teacher will point to the color that represents the letter A and then the students will sound out the letter A. The teacher will do this for the letters T and O and the students will sound out the letters in order and then they would make the word “gato.”
