  2. Definition • Classifiers are hand shapes that represents and/or describe shapes, size, things and location. • It does not replace a sign. Classifiers ADD information.

  3. What are classifiers? • Replaces a noun after having stated the noun • Clarifies a message • More efficient

  4. Why are classifiers helpful? • Show movement, location, and appearance • Show where and how something moves • Show what it looks like • Where it is located

  5. How do you write classifiers in ASL gloss? CL: 3 CL: B CL:BB CL: C CL:CC CL: CLAW 5

  6. Letter classifiers • CL:A- Statue, placement of items on a table • CL: B- time marker, 4 people together (standing, walking), walls, floors • CL:BB – Any flat surface or to show how surfaces look, shelves, flat objects

  7. Some more • CL:C- cup, trash can, large pipe, shape of something • CL:CC- A garbage can, a telephone pole • CL:F- coins, buttons, eyes moving back and forth, pearl necklace, shape of cigar • CL:G- eyebrows, mouth, mustache, collar, bird beak

  8. More letter classifiers • CL:S- show a head- nodding • CL:U, CL:V- people sitting or standing, thin objects, diving board, tie

  17. Classifier Assignment! • Look through your old magazine or catalogs at home. • Pick 5 things that you can describe using classifiers! • Cut out and paste pictures on construction paper. Label the classifier symbols • You will describe your pictures in class!

  18. Your Evaluation • You will be graded on your creativity of pictures on paper • You will be graded on your classifier presentation in class. DUE DATE: MONDAY OCT 12, 2008
